Nature Nature, a poem by Sophie Dormal

Nature Nature
Whisper in my ears
That you’ll always take over
When my body is composted
When the soil of my breasts
Where an invasion was declared
Grows back in the spring
Tell me you’ll be there
Long after we are all gone

When my scars turn into seeds
When my lymph nodes become
Little trees, breathing again
And my brain can be free of PTSD
Let my cells turn into branches
Squirrels can climb on

And meanwhile I will gather
My food for thoughts for the winter
And enjoy this humane experience
While I am here
On this beautiful earth
Oh nature nature
Tell me it’s not time yet

My therapist told me I should write you a letter, a poem by Sophie Dormal

Dear breasts
It’s true I never cared much for you
After my uncle touched you
Over my pjs when I was a child
My safety net sunk deep down that day
It was lost forever, until now

I even had a dream when I was ten
That a thief was in my house
He was chasing me with a knife
to cut you off

Dear breasts
You robbed me of so much
I never let any boys touch you
Then as an adult you betrayed me again

I am grateful you helped me feed my babies
We almost had a perfect run
Until you chose to have mastitis
You got me all feverish
Blocked milk ducts as a reminder
You run the show

It was too perfect to be true
I was getting closer to you
But you did it again
You gave me stage 3 cancer

That’s why my therapist says
I have to learn to love you again
Not pretend like you don’t even exist
And dissociate from my body

So I am asking you
Can we be done?
Can we make peace?
I promise to be gentle to you
I forgive you and I will wear my
Heart on my sleeve for you
Next to my scars
Cuz I am a friendly warrior
Who wants to trust and love you again

First Fall, a poem by Sophie Dormal

Hair dropping
Chest throbbing

Despite your cold capping efforts
The first fall
Is like skydiving into fear

You’ll watch your hands in terror
Cry in the shower

You’re made up of stuff
That you are now supposed to lose

Amputated
Bald spots

You’re not invincible
Your life hangs on a thread

The universe’s pulling the strings

‘Nature’s Disasters,’ a poem by Sophie Dormal

When I give my body credit
For the life experiences disguised in disasters
I think about nature, earthquakes, tornadoes, black holes
And remember that I am whole
But also part of it
Trespassing into the cancer zone
I learned I don’t need permission
To accept any growth that comes after any fire
Whether set by myself, or Life
