Today, I sat down and cried my way through The Experiment.

For those unaware, The Experiment took members of the public on a tour of a disabled living facility and filmed their reactions.
Except the facility wasn't real.
It was a recreation of the persecution disabled people faced in Nazi Germany.

I'm aware that this documentary has faced a lot of controversy, but truthfully? I thought it was so, SO necessary. Here in the UK, hatred towards the disabled community is on the rise, and ableist propaganda in the media is becoming stronger. I'm aware I've only been disabled now for four years, but the past six months has been the first time I've truly felt scared as a disabled woman. People are telling us what they think of us, and it isn't pretty.

Let's be honest here - those of us who are disabled already knew what the outcome would be. We see it, we live it every day. The fact that a lot of the participants supported the facility and didn't see through the propaganda was no surprise to us. But hopefully, the non-disabled general public have had their eyes opened. It truly IS that easy to be fooled, it IS that easy to slip into an ableist society, and it IS that easy to happily go along with an atrocity.

It was a really, really hard watch. As I said, I cried my way through it. I also learnt a lot! I'm a history buff and yet had never heard of Aktion T4. The number of disabled people who were murdered was eye-opening, and devastating to see. It's a hard watch, but an important one.

With disabled actors and presenters at the centre of the documentary, I found this a really interesting watch, and would absolutely recommend taking a look if you haven't already. I know not everyone in the community agrees (and I do understand their perspective), but I think this is something we should all see.
