Released in 2018 and starring Asa Butterfield alongside Sophie Turner and Skyler Gisondo, Time Freak (also known as Time after Time in some regions) is an interesting romantic comedy that tries really hard to redefine the genre.

Set after a difficult break-up, it follows genius college student Stillman as he invents a time machine to go back in time to fix his past mistakes.

Firstly, the best aspect of this movie was undoubtedly the hilarious friendship between Asa Butterfield and Skyler Gisondo's characters Stillman and Evan. This is because not only was their banter hilariously written but their personalities and characteristics were also crafted to be so down to earth that even though Time Freak's subject matter is quite far fetched the idea of their friendship lasting all the way through grounds it in reality.

In addition, this camaraderie between college friends also allowed the time travel elements of this movie to be done in a slightly different way than we have seen before. For example, because Stillman took Evan on his time travel escapades it meant that it wasn't as serious as other time travel movies such as About Time and The Time Travellers Wife.

However, that being said this movie did have a lot of negatives. For instance, even though it's time travel elements were slightly different than previous movies it's story was still full of many romantic comedy cliches which meant it was easily predictable. In addition, the outdated jilted love trope that this movie constantly implores throughout has been done countless times before.

Building on this, the ending to Time Freak was very anticlimatic as even though there was a showdown it's pay off wasn't that great. And finally, i have a hard time with movies like this because they are always very male centric which means that their female characters are often neglected and less developed which is sadly the case with this film. This is because Sophie Turner's character Debbie falls completely by the way side for the majority of it's runtime.

In conclusion, Time Freak is a cliche driven romantic comedy that needed to carve a more unique voice for itself.

I give this a 𝟱.𝟱/𝟭𝟬
