7 books that are not as bookstagram-famous as they should be, but hold a special place in my heart (and on my shelf).

Putting this list together, I realised how much geography influences both, my reading and my writing. My own YA novel, Wrong Turns Only, follows a mother and daughter on a road trip across coastal India. Clearly, I like my books with a few kms on them.

Which book has taken you furthest from home?

‘Reading is to the mind what exercise is to the body.’
- Joseph Addison

Reading for pleasure, even 5 minutes a day, can be a powerful tool in boosting our mental health and wellbeing.

Today is Mental Health Day 💭
It’s also Bookshop Day 📚

The perfect day to combine the two and treat yourself to a book or two.

Bookshops are also the perfect, peaceful place to escape the world 🙏

There are literary genres yet to be named; short burst, not poems, not essays, found in the detritus of the online world. They come under pictures on social media, or in texts, or DM’s in any number of other platforms. Like little word filled digital firecrackers, some of these messages burst and shine, and then, as the scroll and feed grows, disappear into our quickly created online past.

Our attentions are fragmented, our past has become so close to the present we no longer have the luxury and ease of contemplation. This is why some of these little notes shine so much brighter, they provide contemplation digested in the present, in the flash as you read you feel the act of thinking happening in a similar way as in a conversation, but of course, not the same at all. These are translations of ideas made across miles, they can illuminate hidden next to the ego posts and photos of plates of food. They are little islands of wisdom amongst the glut.

Today, a few notes collected from instagram and DM’s, a few firecrackers that, I felt, shine and burst and were worthy of bringing back up to the brief present. They all sparkle with travel, and that ephemeral magic moving about our globe can create.

Words from @drsteveboyes in the Nyungwe Forest.

A DM from Jon Miceler a few days ago in Mongolia.

and words from @sophy_roberts whilst in Kathmandu a few years back, heading home.
