The third Weekend Writers’ Retreat with A Public Space is in the books! Thank you to our partners @kaatsbaan for a beautiful long weekend in the Hudson Valley, surrounded by art, fall foliage, and company.

This year, participants nurtured new and ongoing projects with workshop instructors Jo Ann Beard, Mary-Beth Hughes, Han Ong, Tracy O’Neill, Robert Sullivan, Peter Trachtenberg, and Ada Zhang; gained inspiration from craft and literary talks with Sharifa Rhodes-Pitts, Samantha Hunt, Amitava Kumar, and Dave King; and joined a movement class for writers with Sondra Loring. For the first time, writers culminated the weekend with a Literary Open Mic, sharing work old and new, before heading to the Farmhouse backyard for a celebratory dinner by our friends @tables.of.contents.

As writers, we all have crazy TBRs and endless deadlines… which is why I’m all the more grateful to my friends and mentors who kindly agreed to read THREE and blurb it.

Thank you, @moorehonor , @wheatfu , @ansi1933 , Yiyun, Yasmin, and @sorrowsofothers for your time and thoughtful attention. It means the world to me and makes a big difference in introducing the book to readers, reviewers, and booksellers who might not be familiar with it or my work.

I know blurbs have become a bit of a controversial topic in recent years, but I’m so glad I mustered the courage to ask these amazing writers (or, you know, gently coerce them into reading my book). I hope I can pay it forward to someone else in the future.

Ada Zhang is a graduate of the Iowa Writers’ Workshop. Her short stories have appeared in A Public Space, McSweeney’s, Alaska Quarterly Review, and elsewhere. She was the James C. McCreight Fiction Fellow at the University of Wisconsin and currently teaches at the Iowa Writers’ Workshop. “The Sorrows of Others” is her first book.

NARRATIVE DUETS | MARY-BETH HUGHES

Much of how I think about narrative is shaped by my experience as a dancer. Moving through Merce Cunnigham’s studio, I learned to see narrative as a sequence of patterns, not enacted, but embodied.

In this workshop, we’ll explore the idea of narrative patterns, with a focus on narrative duets. We’ll look at passages from Tolstoy’s ANNA KARENINA, among other work, for patterns to mark and move through and break away from.

New York, you were spectacular. I almost forgive you for trapping me in a subway time loop on Canal Street.

What a joy it was to launch Fablemaker at @theworldsboroughbookshop with the brilliant @bootcutkhakis, whose poems are as necessary as breath, who asked such insightful questions (while also ambushing me with questions from our friends in absentia). Thank you to @jeekohpoet and Kim and @gaudyboysu for organizing all of it!

The Fablemaker Tour is basically an excuse to hang out with my friends. A wild @jonnyteklit appeared, after Andrew had lied TO MY FACE earlier that day that he hadn't made it to New York! And @sorrowsofothers was there! Whom I hadn't seen since she abandoned her post as mayor of Madison! AND @jasmine_huang0930! A Sewanee reunion! Jasmine and I last hung out in Memphis, TN, before I left for my MFA. I got to stamp a ginkgo leaf in her book! YSR 🐅

On Sunday, I wandered around the Brooklyn Book Festival and signed books at the Gaudy Boy table. After several years of walking by the table at AWP, it was almost surreal to be on the other side of it - thank you to everyone who stopped by and bought a book! I'm so proud to be a Gaudy Boy author.
