Jane Jin Kaisen’s work “Neokdurim (Passage)” is part of the exhibition Photography Now! at The Black Diamond.

In the photograph, Shaman Koh Sunahn of Jeju Island is seen together with Jane Jin Kaisen. Photographed in the private home of the shaman, the artist is seated on the floor in front of Koh; behind them is a folding screen decorated with a Korean mountain scene. The deceased Korean grandparents of the artist appear in a black-and-white photograph on the low table, which also contains offerings in the form of oranges and apples on small brass plates. Kaisen’s grandmother used to attend Koh’s rituals while the artist’s grandfather, an elementary school teacher and local historian, was a former teacher of Koh.

A shaman is a spiritual guide who mediates between the living and the dead, thereby establishing a temporary connection across time and space. In the photograph, shaman Koh Sunahn is performing neokdurim, a shamanic ritual segment of recalling the lost souls. People are said to lose their soul when they are sick, but once the shaman expels these pudasi, lesser evil spirits, the body will return to a very clean and pure state and then the lost soul is taken back. Neokdurim thereby marks a transition: the reunion of soul and body.

I’ve had many thoughts about how to speak about the Danish IUD campaign in Kalaallit Nunaat as a collective trauma.

A generation of women (girls in most cases) losing their bodily autonomy at the hands of the Danish state. Families that never grew to be what they could have been. Trauma carried across generations.

During the process of creating this piece I had many conversations with different women.
I had thoughts about family jewellery as a way of remembering, and about what we carry across generations.
I also really wanted to highlight the fact that the IUD used at the time, isn’t the same IUD as we know today. It was called a ‘Lippes Loop’ and was much bigger and not approved for use in Denmark at the time when the campaign first began.

Other artists have also engaged with the ongoing consequences of the Danish IUD campaign through their work. Here are two pieces I deeply respect that I want to acknowledge:

In 2025, @marriortoq created “4500+”, a brutal and beautiful work consisting of 4,500 porcelain IUDs arranged in a pile, each representing a woman. The work has been shown at Grønbech Gård in Bornholm, in Sweden, the faroe islands and in Nuuk.

If you’re in Copenhagen, I highly recommend visiting Copenhagen Contemporary (CC) to experience @lisbethkarline’s “Inunngorsimanngitsut (The Unborn)”, consisting of 43,000 beads, each representing an unborn life.

While reading an old document about the creation of a tupilak, I stumbled upon a sentence explaining how you can only kill the tupilak chasing you by holding your harpoon in your left hand and shooting from the left glove.

Today, we mainly know the tupilak as a physical, carved figure, perhaps something handed down from a family member or kept as a tourism charm. I have several lying around my apartment, even one on my keys serving as a keychain.

Anyway. Originally, the tupilak was a mythical, spiritual creature used by shamans to take revenge on enemies or sometimes for protection. Made from animal bones, it was gathered, assembled, and carved during a special ritual (another day, another story).
The tupilak could then take shape in front of the person it was made to confront, appearing as an animal of sorts, maybe an oversized seal or an abstract creature. From there on, you would have little chance of surviving. Unlessssss - the left glove.

I have been fascinated by discovering the old beliefs and stories of my ancestors, and I wish I had learned more about the history, myths, and tales of Kalaallit Nunaat growing up.

The left glove has stayed with me ever since, becoming a motif I have explored in my practice in different ways, shapes, and forms.
Ironically, after making this photograph, I lost the glove. I kind of like the thought that it has gone out to live its own life, maybe protecting someone else somewhere else in the city.

Larissa Sansour is among the five artists that we are currently presenting as part of the group show Photography Now! at The Black Diamond.

Born in East Jerusalem, Larissa Sansour’s own heritage and lived experience greatly influences her artistic practice. Using the visual languages of sci-fi, documentary and opera she reframes the history of Palestine and its ongoing struggle between loss and survival. In doing so, her work also grows into broader studies of grief, belonging, memory, inherited trauma and ecological crisis.
