Saukt mūziku par “kinematogrāfisku” ir sena klišeja: sinestēzija, ainas, ko mūzika uzbur galvā, Braiena Īno mūzika neesošām filmām. Musique vérité! to apgriež otrādi.

Calling music “cinematic” is an old trope: synesthesia, pictures painted in your head, Eno’s music for imaginary films. Musique vérité! turns it around. How cinematic is the music actually made for the screen? To open RIGA IFF, our two music “geeks” limit themselves to soundtracks only: scores, songs and moods made to serve the picture. Not “filmic” music, not music that sounds like film, but the real thing. As as the images, you can move with it.

WHAT WOULD THE BALTIC WAY SOUND LIKE TODAY?

Most of us at KALVE were born after August 23, 1989. But the belief in collective strength, freedom and our differences has travelled through generations.

This August 23, we’re reconnecting the Baltics, this time through sound.

Baltic Radio is a special mix by @soulsystems, bringing together music, voices and fragments from Latvia, Estonia and Lithuania.

August 23 at 10.00, across all our coffee shops and online (link in bio).

The companionship of Elvi Soulsystems and Trashy Trax is one of sheer longitude, but somehow it’s been almost a year since we’ve seen them together in the DJ booth.

If our memory serves – last time it was the explosive finale of our concert season when they played until the morning light. This time we’ve asked them to come together in a different context – our “home party”, our “school dance”, our traditional series Discothèque de l’école which conincides with the Riga City Festival this time.

So it seems it’s going to be bit warm to put it mildly. The duo are to start inside the house after dark – elevenish. But before the disco the terrace will welcome our dear, dear friend Šmits and his humongous record collection.

Starting 9 PM – 5 EUR admission, pre-sale 3 EUR (link in bio)

Arī šogad it visi mīļi gaidīti pievienoties trīs nereāli kaislīgu cilvēku sarunai caur mūziku.

IEEJA: BEZ MAKSAS

Last year we became home for the birth of a new jazz trio. This trio does not include any players but can nonetheless take an audience on a journey. This is a trio of very different generations, genesis stories and in a sense – different tastes too. But all three share one "philia" to the broad ocean of music. One is a gourmand of music and film from the days of VHS, also a previous owner of a legendary restaurant, in short – a treasure of this city: VISVALDIS DREISKA. The other is a magician of the digital (photography, sound, anything), lover of obsolete technology and a fundamentalist of design – MAKSIMS KOPEIKINS (sometimes referred to by the stage name minim). And the last is probably the most enigmatic yet known-to-almost-everyone DJ and curator – ELVISS ZANTS (referred to mostly by his stage name Elvi Soulsystems).
So this year – again! – everyone's welcome, everyone's invited. We'll start on the terrace and then see what happens.
