So before anyone calls an intervention…

No, I didn’t record 500 guitars.

Yet… 😉

I’m recalling the mix for “Stranger in My Own Hometown,” and the Pro Tools session has grown to over 500 tracks (once you count the audio, printed effects, routing, and folders etc)

So I finally got around to setting up my @elgato Stream Deck and started by giving it a KICK button

@soundflowapp finds the 30 tracks (I have my reasons haha) connected to the kick, including all its shared effects while hiding the others from view.

Hit Back and they return, unmuted, untouched, and presumably judging me for over producing haha

The beauty is I’m building this for my own music and sound design examples and as I get deeper into Atmos, I need the flexibility for the sessions to serve many purposes.

Plus I’d rather not spend half the day finding the snare and all it’s reverbs

Should have done this ages ago!

Probably one of my favorite devices in my studio! My Stream Deck incorporated with @soundflowapp saves me countless hours of setting up sessions and speeds up my workflow tremendously! It’s basically my own studio assistant and you don’t have to be a coding genius to configure it to your liking.

I went and watched TV while my studio bounced 100+ a cappellas without me. 🤯

For the past several months I’ve been deep in a massive project, over 50 songs. When a request came in for a cappellas of every single one, I knew brute-forcing it wasn’t an option.

Enter @soundflowapp and @ascheps’s Scheps Bounce Factory.

First, I wrote a custom SoundFlow script to automate the tedious prep work: opening sessions, saving as, rerouting my mix bus for offline bouncing, muting my printed mix, disarming mute automation, duplicating a few inserts. Stuff that’s no big deal on one song but absolutely soul-crushing at scale. Now it’s one button on my Stream Deck. One second. Done. ✅

Then I layered in Scheps Bounce Factory. Using the new SoundFlow panel inside @avid.protools, I set up “wet” and “dry” a cappella exports for 50+ songs and saved each as a bounce snapshot in the standalone Bounce Factory app.

Here’s where it gets wild: I queued up 20+ songs at a time, hit bounce, and walked away. Bounce Factory took over, closing sessions, opening the next one, bouncing both passes, moving on. I hung out with my family, watched some TV, and got an alert on my Apple Watch when everything was done. 📱

Watching my faders snap into action on their own, sessions opening and closing without me touching anything... honestly one of the most grin-inducing moments I’ve had in the studio in a long time.

Enormous love and gratitude to my dear friend and mentor Andrew (@ascheps) for building this alongside the incredible team at @soundflowapp. Full-circle moment: so much of what I do in the studio every day traces back to what Andrew’s taught me over the years and albums we’ve made together. The fact that his tools are now giving me hours of my life back? 🥹💗

If I hadn’t invested time learning these tools, I’d probably still be in my studio bouncing a cappellas instead of writing this caption.

Go learn your tools. Future you will be so glad you did. 🚀

Finally got to make some session specific scripts in @soundflowapp for one of my regular engineering gigs and was absolutely stoked with the results. It really highlights the importance of having consistent workflows.

When I started recording, I didn’t know much about plugins. We were unsatisfied with the sound we captured, so we moved the SM57 around.

I noticed that amps sounded more distorted than live, and that a bit less gain allowed for more definition. I couldn’t edit well, so we tried to nail the parts. We made our own sound effects with instruments and baseball bats and N64 cartridges.

Those early mixes turned out kinda bogus, and probably could’ve done without all the EQ. But between instinct and limited resources, we made some decent records.

The tools were just becoming accessible, but not ubiquitous. I wish more people had that opportunity today.
