The first time you rent filmmaking gear is a whole experience. Arriving at the warehouse where all the equipment is located is like being in a toy store where you can see everything you thought you couldn’t ever have, or rather, play with. Choosing wisely with a budget in mind is an art, because 99% of the time we always want to take more than we really need.

As good rookies, and because it’s part of the process, we’ve learned a very valuable lesson - never rent equipment and then take it to a micro-apartment in one of Lisbon’s most inaccessible areas (Bairro Alto) just to save time and have two extra hours of sleep the next day. Believe us, it’s not worth it. Your back, arms and head will thank you. Even so, and stupidly we know, we’d do it all over again!

With dedication and perseverance, without ever giving up, great things can be achieved. The music video for Beautiful lies by @yafeniii is proof of that.

After several small jobs and a lot of headaches, this was Cllctiv's first paid job. Without any excessive negotiation, feeling that our work was being valued for the first time, and also thanks to this and the mistakes of the past, in this production we had the opportunity to plan the whole process more concretely and identify all the needs.

For the first time, we had the budget to rent equipment, which helped us enormously with the lighting, something that had hindered any production we had done up to that point.

With a little more thought, patience and planning (although with a lot of mistakes thrown in, which is normal) we managed to create a very clean music video that did justice to the song and its message, giving Yafeni greater visibility and opening some doors to a variety of opportunities, including performances at a wide variety of festivals, including the Westway Lab Festival, Sommersby Out Jazz and the Termómetro Festival. At the end of the day, our work had a positive impact on our client music career and we were really proud of it.

From cars that were turned into dollies and had to be pushed with brute force because spending money on gas wasn’t an option and because there was no budget for gimbals, to construction lights to serve as “professional” lighting bought with what was left of everyone’s spare change, to rigs set up completely backwards due to our inexperience, not forgetting the use of a single lens because buying a metabones was a mirage and no one wanted to lend us lenses, there were several circumstances that would be the end and stop for this small, or better, micro-production.

We like to say that it was a sub-zero production because nothing went smoothly, and we didn’t had the option to do so. We were before zero. Likewise, we were just starting out. Really.

Even so, as a team and as a collective, always with our heads held high, we always did the best we could, and we’re proud of it.
