“city | country” is a very special issue of @south85journal for me because it is my FIRST issue as assistant poetry editor! 💜💛

My thanks to Laurel Eshelman for being an amazing poetry editor, and especially to @lesliepwriter for her leadership, and for entrusting me with the role. Learning the ropes of a lit mag has been an absolute joy.

I might be biased (I am), but this issue is really good. I’m always blown away by the work of all our teams, but the poems in this issue are really something special. Read all the wonderful pieces (and check out the awesome photography by @maureenlangloss too!) on the South 85 website:

I am incredibly thrilled to share that my new creative nonfiction piece, “The Night I Left My Initials on Sixth Avenue,” has been published in the newest issue of South 85 Journal, out today.

This story takes a look back at the electric, feral energy of New York City in the summer of 1983, a narrow Sixth Avenue walk-up, and a brief, profound connection with a stranger that left a permanent mark.

Here is a glimpse into the piece:

“It was a symphony of car horns and radio static drifting from open windows, punctuated by the subterranean scream of subway brakes beneath the pavement. Even the thick summer air felt electric, vibrating with the restless motion of a city that never quite caught its breath.”

“I watched my initials take shape in the wood, pale against the dark surface. Behind me, Anthony’s presence was a warm weight... Another mark added to the crowd, a silent confession that I existed here once.”

A huge thank you to the editors at @south85journal for including my
work alongside so many talented writers.

The issue is officially live today. You can read my full piece and explore the rest of the issue at the link in my bio and today in my stories. 😉💙

“The Last Farm on Wheeling Avenue” is now published in South 85 Journal.

This poem is about the changing landscape of home, the farms, families, and familiar places that gradually disappear as everything around them changes.

Grateful to South 85 Journal for giving this one a home.

Read it now at South 85 Journal.

New interview just dropped! Many thanks to the good folks at South 85 Journal, especially Dr. Christine Schott, Leslie Pietrzyk, and Harris Quinn, a heck of a writer in his own right. This one includes a trip to Waffle House. How do YOU take YOUR hashbrowns?
