The 2026 College of the Atlantic Summer Institute brought thinkers, leaders, and change makers to Bar Harbor to explore the theme of “Toward a More Perfect Union.” Through thought-provoking conversations and diverse perspectives, the institute created space to reflect on the challenges and possibilities shaping our shared future.
.
We’re honored to have welcomed inspiring speakers like Stacey Abrams, whose insights challenged us to imagine what a more perfect union could look like.

Many classes at COA head outside for fieldwork, taking advantage of our beautiful backyard, Acadia National Park! 🌊

Yesterday, Professor Kara Gadeken’s Intertidal Ecology class visited Otter Point to practice field notes and search for intertidal organisms.

What a whale of an evening! 🐋✨ Finny the fin whale has officially made her debut at Maine Beer Company. Articulated by Dan DenDanto ’91 and recovered with the help of COA students—and Maine Beer Company’s support— Finny now stands as one of the only articulated whale exhibits in the country displayed outside a museum.

Huge thanks to Maine Beer Company and all those who support COA Allied Whale and the majestic marine mammals of Maine. 💙

Have you tried crickets?! 🦗 Around the world, insects are a common and sustainable food source. In Introduction to Entomology, taught by COA Dorr Museum of Natural History Director Carrie Graham, students explored the culinary world of crickets, bringing dishes to the COA dining hall for people to try.

Ready for a field trip?! 🚐🌲🌊

Intertidal Ecology is a partnered course with Ecology: Natural History, exploring the same topics but in different environments! In this course, students are introduced to the many diverse intertidal ecosystems of coastal Maine, from rocky shorelines to tidal mudflats to salt marshes.
