Our first encounter with manatees 😍 such gentle giants, curious but also happy to keep us at arms length. Such a surprise turn for a tour to Tulum 😁

Cotten's take Cancun pt 2! This was excursion day. We went to the Mayan ruins in Tulum, cenote Corazón, snorkeling, and tried to find manatees at a beautiful lagoon. Best day by far!

I avoid resorts when I am in Mexico so these are my personal tips for non-resort travel.

1. Stay somewhere walkable but off main tourist areas. In Playa Del Carmen I like to stay between Calle 34 and 46 between 10 and 30ave. Taxis are expensive so being good walking shoes.

2. Bring a reusable water bottle and get big bottles of water for your condo or room. Bring it with you everywhere. Ordering multiple drinks at restaurants will kill your budget fast including bottled water.

3. Hire a private tour guide like @soylapesera to take you all the places you want to see in one day rather then doing multiple group tours. Group tours can be super challenging, you are better to go on your own and see what you want to see on your own timeline.

4.Look for restaurants that are slightly off the beaten path that are full of locals! They will be cheap, delicious and safe. Locals do not eat at places that do not have safe food handling practices either! Last time we were there we found the most delicious tacos for 23 pesos!

One final tip! Make sure you barter with street vendors. It’s part of the Mexican culture and they will not sell you something if they are not making money. If you are paying full price, you are probably paying over double what you should! And… pay in local currency… do not bring US cash, the days of bringing US cash are done! You can always bring your local currency and change it when you get there. The rates are comparable or better at the airport or in town where you are staying!

On our tour to Chichen Itza, we also stopped to check out a couple cenotes. Cenotes are sinkholes that are the result of collapsed limestone that expose ground water, and they’re all so beautiful and different! They’re very common in Mexico. We visited Cenote Ik-Kil and Cenote Xux-Ha and enjoyed floating in the water and jumping in off the ledges. We also visited Valladolid, an old town founded in 1543 with Spanish architecture. We had a great time checking out these places and we’re so grateful to Miguel from @soylapesera who drove us on our tour all day! We really enjoyed getting to know him and hearing about his life in Mexico!

Ik-Kil Cenoté is 30 years old and an open type. It has fabulous facilities, lifejackets lockers, changing rooms and bathroom facilities which are clean. They play some lovely music which makes it very peaceful. I felt like I was in a flotation tank - there was a high platform for jumping, but I was too scared. if you get there early, you can have the whole place to yourself and there is a decent sized carpark.
