The ruins of Cowdray House, Midhurst, W.Sussex

As I was working in the vicinity I was able to bunk off work for a couple of hours on Thursday morning for a visit to the Cowdray ruins with the @spab1877 Sussex group.

The house was begun in the 1520s and burnt down in 1793 and whilst there is no access to the ruins themselves currently due to stone fall, we did get up on the roof of the hexagonal kitchen tower for a great view in the autumn sunshine.

It was a pleasure to be again at the West Midlands Heritage Careers Event on Wednesday. We had a superb day chatting with students and visitors, all interested in our products; but generally hoping to go into a career in Heritage.
Also there, was @carverofclay Ian Martinson, creating a sculpture of a Dragon’s Head; part of a set underway! Some great conversations with Architects and some promising projects to come 🤞Thanks to everyone involved in organising such a wonderful showcase ( Hannah & Chris ) and @stonemasons_of_worcester for the help in setting up👏

🏛️ Proud to Support the Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings (SPAB)

We're pleased to announce that ProVision Drones has become a supporter of the Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings (SPAB), an organisation dedicated to protecting and conserving the UK's historic buildings.

As a drone roof inspection company, we recognise the importance of understanding and preserving older buildings, where traditional materials, historic craftsmanship and sensitive construction methods require particular care.

Our drone inspections provide detailed aerial imagery of historic roofs, chimneys, leadwork and other difficult-to-access features, helping building owners and conservation professionals assess visible conditions with minimal physical intervention.

We're proud to support SPAB's work in promoting the sensitive repair, maintenance and conservation of our built heritage.

Protecting the past, with the technology of today.

Find out more abot SPAB and the great work that they do, here https://www.spab.org.uk/

We were delighted to welcome Han Bee to Town Mill recently for a few days exploring the challenges of maintaining a historic working watermill.

Han is a Millwrighting Fellow with the Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings (SPAB) @spab1877 whose specialist programme is helping to safeguard one of Britain’s most endangered traditional crafts.

As part of their Fellowship, Han is visiting mills across the country, gaining first-hand experience of the remarkable variety of machinery, engineering and conservation challenges involved in keeping these historic buildings operational.

And there’s certainly plenty to learn at Town Mill!

Every historic mill has its own character, its own engineering peculiarities and its own maintenance requirements. Understanding these differences, and developing the specialist skills needed to address them, is essential to ensuring their survival for future generations.

Traditional millwrighting is now recognised as a critically endangered craft, making SPAB’s investment in developing the next generation of skilled millwrights particularly valuable.

It was a pleasure to welcome Han, share some of Town Mill’s experiences and contribute to the wider exchange of knowledge that is so important to the future of our milling heritage.

Thank you, Han! We wish you every success as your Fellowship continues and look forward to following your progress.

Keeping our milling heritage alive takes knowledge, dedication and skilled hands — and it’s wonderful to see those skills being passed on.

The isolated Heath chapel, Salop, is remarkable as it has remained unchanged since the 1150s. It was nearly lost when its fine timber roof was discovered to be close to collapse but saved by the @spab1877 in the early C20th. There’s much to enjoy in such a small space, the well hidden key, its tub font, the pews recycled at some dim point in the past from a medieval screen, it’s flakey walls and wall paintings (that are in need of some care now). We even saw a hare in the churchyard as we left. Nice that Nutmeg led the way to the door - as keen as us to see what was inside. The perfect #churchgoing visit.

Safeguarding a Master Lineage: The Kenneth Denton Bequest-

We are deeply honoured to have received the complete master collection of the late Kenneth Denton RSMA FRSA ISMP (1932–2024) at our Hythe studio—comprising 70 large, exquisite hand-painted wood graining and marbling panels, alongside his historic trade tools.
Kenneth’s story is deeply rooted in Kent.
Raised in Rochester, he apprenticed with Gull Bros before establishing an international reputation as a fine landscape artist. Upon retiring from painting, he returned to his decorative roots, producing master exhibition panels.
What makes this collection extraordinary is its pedigree: Kenneth was taught by Arthur Gull, a direct student of Thomas Kershaw—the legendary 19th-century master grainer whose work adorns Buckingham Palace and the V&A Museum.
Rather than sitting in storage, all 70 panels are now being used as hands-on reference benchmarks for students studying at our SCS Heritage Decorative Paint Techniques Skills Academy, based in Hythe, Kent and our National Trust partner workshops and courses at the Heritage and Rural Skills Centre, Coleshill, Swindon.

One-to-one and small group courses and workshops in traditional heritage decorative painting skills like faux marbling, faux stone and wood graining, and ancient crafts like gilding, broken colour effects and aging and distressing techniques are available to booking every month throughout the year, with spaces available now!

Gain valuable CPD accreditation to add to your CV, secure in the knowledge that all of our courses have been assessed for content value and skills training quality.

Exploring Suffolk with @folklore_building_conservation

Walpole Old Chapel looks like a farmhouse from the outside then you step inside to the beautifully calm (& nautical) feel of the worship space, with plenty of honest repairs. Then to Sibton Abbey ruins & Framlingham Castle to check out the repairs & consolidation of ruins.

Thanks for a great day Thom!
