This picture was made during the first research of the auroras on Jupiter on January 2, 2011. It shows the X-ray data from the Chandra X-ray Observatory overlaid on an optical image of Jupiter from Hubble. Solar storms are triggering X-ray auroras on Jupiter that are about 8 times brighter than normal. Normally the solar winds will get weaker in a couple of years because the sun has 11 year during periods in which there are much or not much solar winds. Good day/night!

The Hubble Space Telescope just snapped photos of the biggest black hole we've ever observed

A new photograph of #galaxy #NGC4889 may look peaceful from such a great distance, but it’s actually home to one of the biggest black holes that astronomers have ever identified. The Hubble Space Telescope allowed scientists to capture photos of the galaxy, located in the #ComaCluster about 300 million light-years away. The supermassive black hole hidden away in NGC 4889 breaks all kinds of records, even though it is currently classified as dormant.

So how big is it, exactly? Well, according to our best estimates, the supermassive black hole is roughly 21 billion times the size of the Sun, and its event horizon (an area so dense and powerful that light can’t escape its gravity) measures 130 billion kilometers in diameter. That’s about 15 times the diameter of #Neptune’s orbit around the Sun, according to scientists at the #Hubble Space #Telescope. At one point, the black hole was fueling itself on a process called hot accretion. Space stuff like gases, dust, and galactic debris fell towards the black hole and created an accretion disk. Then that spinning disk of space junk, accelerated by the strong gravitational pull of the largest known black hole, emitted huge jets of energy out into the galaxy.

LDN 988
Stars are forming in dark, dusty molecular cloud LDN 988. Seen near picture center some 2,000 light-years distant, LDN 988 and other nearby dark nebulae were cataloged by Beverly T. Lynds in 1962 using Palomar Observatory Sky Survey plates. Narrowband and near-infrared explorations of the dark nebula reveal energetic shocks and outflows light-years across associated with dozens of newborn stars. But in this sharp optical telescopic view, the irregular outlines of LDN 988 and friends look like dancing stick figures eclipsing the rich starfields of the constellation Cygnus. From dark sites the region can be identified by eye alone. It's part of the Great Rift of dark clouds along the plane of the Milky Way galaxy known as the Northern Coalsack.

Zeta oph : Runaway star
Like a ship plowing through cosmic seas, runaway star Zeta Ophiuchi produces the arcing interstellar bow wave or bow shock seen in this stunning infrared portrait. In the false-color view, bluish Zeta Oph, a star about 20 times more massive than the Sun, lies near the center of the frame, moving toward the left at 24 kilometers per second. Its strong stellar wind precedes it, compressing and heating the dusty interstellar material and shaping the curved shock front. Around it are clouds of relatively undisturbed material. What set this star in motion? Zeta Oph was likely once a member of a binary star system, its companion star was more massive and hence shorter lived. When the companion exploded as a supernova catastrophically losing mass, Zeta Oph was flung out of the system. About 460 light-years away, Zeta Oph is 65,000 times more luminous than the Sun and would be one of the brighter stars in the sky if it weren't surrounded by obscuring dust. The image spans about 1.5 degrees or 12 light-years at the estimated distance of Zeta Ophiuchi.

"The California Nebula (NGC 1499) is an emission nebula located in the constellation Perseus. It lies at a distance of about 1,000 light years from Earth, and its fluorescence is due to excitation of the Hβ line in the nebula by the nearby prodigiously energetic O7 star, xi Persei (also known as Menkib)." The last time my scope landed on this object I was only really able to come away with a single usable shot. This time the total exposure got up to 76min and I think the results are pretty evident!

All images were taken using the #SkyWatcher ProED 120, Celestron #AVX, modified #Canon #EOS 450D & an #Astronomik CLSCCD light pollution filter. Guiding was done w/ an #Orion SSAG, 50mm guide scope, & PHD2 software. Capturing was controlled with BackyardEOS, stacking was done with Deep Sky Stacker, and processing was done in Pixinsight and Adobe Lightroom. Sub frames were 120sec.

M65 (top), M66 (right), & NGC 3628 (left) - The Leo Triplet

Also known as the M66 group, this trio of galaxies is located in the Leo constellation and is about 35 million light years away. M66 is a fascinating object in itself though, with its dramatic dust lanes and active star forming regions it is the brightest of the three galaxies pictures here and there have even been four supernovae observed within its boundaries! In order to really bring out the details I would need a much larger scope than this, but for a wide-field image of the whole triplet I'm pretty happy with this!

All images were taken using the #SkyWatcher ProED 120, Celestron #AVX EQ mount, modified #Canon #EOS 450D and an #Astronomik CLSCCD light pollution filter. Guiding was done w/ an #Orion SSAG, 50mm guide scope, & PHD2 software. Capturing was controlled with BackyardEOS, stacking was done with Deep Sky Stacker, and processing was done in Pixinsight and Adobe Lightroom. 180sec sub frames were stacked for a total exposure time of 4hr 48min.
