Your guest already checked in. On their phone. Before they reached the lobby.
That's not the future of hospitality. That's already happening.

In this episode of Down the Rabbit Hole, we talk about the real gap between what guests expect and what hotels deliver.
A CEO lands for a two-day work trip packed with meetings. No time for a front desk queue.

The tech is here. Is hospitality ready to build around it?
We go looking for these stories so you don't have to.

Hoteliers personalise every guest experience, yet the event leads they receive are anything but personal.

Most lead sources still hand over a name and a number with little context, which makes filtering out the most profitable event business very tough for sales teams.

Consider a scenario where, on the same Saturday, a property receives 2 enquiries for its event space.

One is a 40-pax corporate offsite with room nights attached, and the other is a 250-guest social celebration that fills the banquet hall but leaves the rooms empty.

On paper, the bigger event looks like the obvious winner, but the right call depends on occupancy, F&B margins, staffing and how the rest of the month is shaping up.

Only the hotelier truly knows those numbers, and no generic lead list can make that decision for them.

Yet the same platforms take a commission on whatever closes, so teams end up paying for enquiries they never had the choice to pick.

We believe hoteliers and venue owners deserve the same personalisation they offer their guests, along with the freedom to choose business that suits their calendar.

That belief is why we built Lead Khata, offering transparent, direct and commission-free access to high-intent, city-specific event enquiries.

The date, pax and requirement are visible upfront, so teams can filter out what doesn’t fit and contact only the leads they can deliver on, whenever they need them.

Choice, after all, is also a feature.

Your hotel's ballroom could get sold... by an OTA.

Hospitality has always been personal. Now it's going digital, fast.

Social functions. Corporate events. Even full bookings, all of it can slip to third parties if hoteliers aren't paying attention.

The properties winning right now?

They've made direct bookings and guest experience their #1 priority, not an afterthought.

We sat down with someone who's seen this shift up close. What he said should make every hotelier rethink their strategy.

Your rate isn’t really “your” rate.

42% of businesses in APAC are still driven by OTAs. Why? Rate parity clauses often stop hotels from publishing a lower rate anywhere else, even their own website. So guests compare, find “a better rate elsewhere,” and book away.

Even the bigger chains feel this squeeze.

The fix: know your parity clause, track direct vs OTA bookings, invest in the guest experience that earns direct trust.

If you are competing only on price, you’ve already undersold yourself.

Why does one hotel command a premium while another struggles to fill its rooms?

Why does one event agency win a project despite being more expensive?

Because customers don’t just buy what you sell. They buy the confidence that you will deliver.

And that’s something I’ve believed in throughout my journey in the events industry.

Our latest Down the Rabbit Hole – The Art of Selling: Hospitality Edition is now LIVE!

Vishal Puri and I sat down with Abhishek Rajagolkar from Hilton to explore how the art of selling is changing.

From selling rooms to selling experiences.

From relationships to data.

From traditional salesmanship to AI.

And one question that stayed with me:

When technology can identify customers, predict demand and recommend prices, what exactly is left for the salesperson?

Quite a lot, I believe.

Because technology can help us sell faster, data can help us sell smarter, but trust is what makes people come back.

Thank you, Abhishek, for your time, wisdom and such an engaging conversation. And Vishal, always a pleasure going down these rabbit holes together!

What becomes possible when an entire ecosystem comes together to build the future of live events in India?

On 7 October, I attended the 5th Live Events Development Cell (LEDC) meeting convened by the Ministry of Information & Broadcasting—my first official engagement as Joint Secretary–North, EEMA.

After more than two decades in events, it was encouraging to see the challenges we face on the ground receiving such focused attention.

The Centre, State Governments, industry bodies and major platforms such as BookMyShow and District coming together to discuss how we simplify permissions, address music licensing, build skills and make organising events easier.

What excites me is the scale of the opportunity.

Every event creates work far beyond the venue. Hotels, transport operators, local businesses, artists, technicians and countless people behind the scenes benefit. When we enable our industry to grow, that opportunity travels with it.

The discussion around purpose-built venues and public-private partnerships was particularly close to my heart. India’s live-events ambition needs infrastructure designed to support it—with safety, accessibility, sustainability and the audience experience built in from the beginning.

Equally encouraging was EEMA being asked to work on inclusivity guidelines and a Green Concert Protocol for WAVES 2027. Growth comes with a responsibility to make our events safer, more welcoming and more sustainable.

There is much to do. But I came away feeling optimistic about the willingness to work together and move things forward.

Humbled and grateful to be part of this effort, alongside Sanjeev Sir and my EEMA colleagues. I look forward to contributing in whatever small way I can—as an individual, an EEMA representative and a founder of Spalba.

We have spent years creating experiences. Being able to contribute to the conditions that will help an entire industry thrive feels deeply meaningful.

What is the one change you believe would unlock the greatest potential for live events in India?

The best hotel salespeople barely pitch.

They ask. They listen. They figure out what the client actually needs before saying a word about rooms or rates.

That's the art of selling hospitality, and few people know it better than Abhishek Rajgolkar, Regional Director, Sales Operations South Asia at Hilton.

On the new episode of Down the Rabbit Hole, he takes us from his first sales job to leading sales across markets, and shows how sales, revenue, marketing and distribution are becoming one team.

Plus: what AI means for the future of hotel sales. 👀

3-4 years back, Mr. Rajgolkar tried to land a major APAC conference.

The hotel inventory was there. Rooms, ready to go.

Then it fell apart. Not to a competitor. To a visa. Thousands of delegates couldn't get one in time, and in MICE, that's a deal-breaker no hotelier can fix alone.

On this episode of Down The Rabbit Hole, we unpack what actually wins global conferences: not just hotel rooms, but roads, connectivity, and hospitality infrastructure working together, the way Dubai does it, where a taxi shows up in 3 to 5 minutes even with crowds everywhere.

For every hotelier and hospitality leader chasing MICE business, this is the story you need to hear.

Stay tuned for the full episode. 🎙️

Your guests don't remember your room rate. They remember how they felt.

Ask any hotelier what they're selling and you'll get the same answer: rooms. Wrong. You're selling an experience, and the moment you forget that, you've lost the guest.

It's not about what you offer anymore. It's about the experience after check-in.
Compete only on price, and you've undersold your property before the guest walks in.

The hoteliers pulling ahead aren't guessing. They're using guest data to know what their guests like before they even ask.

Stop selling rooms. Start selling experiences. Data isn't optional, it's how you understand your guest.

This is exactly what we get in this Episode.
Full conversation drops soon. Stay tuned

One tech feature. One hospitality touch. One question that revealed everything.

Vishal put Nikhil on the spot. The tech answer was clean. Everything on the app.

The phone is an extension of you and the hotel that leverages that better wins.

But the hospitality answer? That's the one that stays with you.

Localised rituals. A Ganesh puja in the lobby at 6 in the evening. Not for aesthetics. Because it belongs there.

In a world where everything is getting faster and smarter, the moment guests remember most will always be the one that felt unmistakably human.

Tech that empowers. Soul that roots.
