I’m so happy to invite you to Sonia’s Commemorative Body Decoration She will be joining @lavieenrosemakery at the Love Food — a gentle, quiet space just down the road from the Church of St Thomas the Apostle on Cowick Street
Sonia is a truly gifted artist with a big heart and a perfect eye for beauty. She paints the most tender pictures on skin, helping you remember a loved one who’s passed or a beloved ancestor — with a favourite motif, a special symbol, flowers, or a soft candle flame to keep their memory glowing bright.
There will also be a DIY Mexican Sugar Skull face-painting worksho in the church hall. Sonia is kindly lending her paints and materials so everyone can have a go, with lovely examples of flowers, hearts and symbols to inspire you. Supported by the wonderful All Souls Day volunteers.

We had such a busy and wonderful Sunday at @exerespect that we’re only just finding a moment to reflect on it all.

A huge thank you to our amazing community of growers who donated, swapped plants, shared stories, stopped for a chat and spent time with us at Exeter Seed Bank.

This was our first plant swap, created in response to the interests and enthusiasm of our community, and it was such a success that we’ll definitely be doing it again next year!

It was also a joy to spend the day alongside @louswildgarden in the plant tent, helping people find new treasures for their gardens, and with @spanglewagon, who brought smiles wherever they went with beautiful face-painted roses 🌹

Thank you to the wonderful team that make Respect Festival happen every year.

This event was part of June Boom, a month-long celebration of culture, creativity and community across our city. Find out more from @in_exeter and @visitexeter @exeterculture , and explore the fantastic programme of events taking place throughout June.

Introducing the artists for Tracing the Matriline, an exhibition by @thedaylightcollectivesw as part of Matrescence Festival UK.

Meet
Matilda Macmillan @matilda_macmillan_art - figurative artist and mother based in South Devon, Matilda has a special interest in capturing the body at times of transformation and transition. She is passionate about making art about the shifts in pregnancy and matrescence, challenging social norms around parenting and channelling rage from unsolicited parenting advice into artwork.

Sonia Kemp @spanglewagon - I came to Exeter in 1989 to complete a Fine Art Degree and discovered as well as making my own iridescent magical collages I also enjoyed playwork and nurturing children's creative imaginations. I was a playworker in the Women's Refuge for families escaping domestic violence. I'm passionate about how art can help us express our feelings and heal trauma.

Jenny Cahill @greenjenny_moverandmaker - Jenny aims to create treasures from both precious and non-precious materials, recycling where possible. Home-ed mum, jeweller, dancer, teacher and co-curator of Tracing the Matriline. Celebrating continued creativity during m/otherhood.

Sophie Blinstrub @my_maternal_journal - mother of 2 living and working in Exeter, Sophie has been an artist and art teacher for 20 years. She currently works in a trauma-informed independent school providing therapeutic education to support students to develop increasingly independent lives, leading to them thrive in adulthood.

Leila Manion @leilamanion - Leila comes from a matriline of artistic and arts supporting women. She creates embroidered pieces prolifically. Often with a feminist subject matter, Leila is an excellent co-parent to the children in her life.

Come and see the full artworks at @exeterphoenixgallery Walkway Gallery, 20th May-24th June and read the stories behind each piece.

Co-curated by Jenny Cahill @greenjenny_moverandmaker and Amy Thornley-Heard @amythornleyheardartist
Supported by @lizzuhumber @exeterphoenixgallery and The Society Des Beaux Arts Exon

Still reflecting on Saturday’s open day… and still so full of joy and feeling the warmth (in every way! ☀️) after such an an amazing day!

Thank you to everyone who came and had a look around, joined the seed bombing and seed sowing, got their faces painted, dipped into a book, had some pancakes, got some plants, or just came around to hang and chat! 🌱🌸😊🥞

Some of you shared lovely messages and drawings reflecting what Zero Mile Gardens means to you. It’s been so wonderful to see and we’re excited to continue growing and enjoying this community space together, along with the veggies, the flowers and the animals! 🐞🍆🌺

We would like to give a special thank you to all who support us and made this day possible. The Norman Family Trust, @cag_devon & @librariesunlimited Together for Tomorrow Partnership. Also, to @theatrealibi for making the garden space possible.

Thank you also to all our volunteers, to @louswildgarden 🌱, @spanglewagon 🌻and Joh 🥞 for joining us on this day.

See you all soon! 😊🫛

Yay, @zeromilegardens open day! 🌞 💛

Such a peaceful, happy vibe in the @theatrealibi garden outside St Thomas @librariesunlimited , where wildflowers and veggie plants went off to new homes, seeds were sown, pancakes were eaten, books were browsed and many colours were painted to celebrate all that nature brings us in our community.

🙌 Thank you to everyone who visited, volunteered, supported our stalls, took part in the activities and just hung out with us, helping to make it such a brilliant morning. And to the brilliant sponsors who make so much possible: ✨ The Norman Family Trust, @cag_devon and @theatrealibi.

1. With 'Sparkly' Sonia @spanglewagon who always brings the magic and beautiful nature art. 🦋
2. Clemence, @zeromilegardens founder, director and so much more, with some of the veg and herb plants grown in the garden. 🫛
3. Fay, our little garden volunteer (and 'badger'!), helping to run the seed pot-making stall with her dad, Seno. 🦡
4. Clara, @zeromilegardens director and seed-bomb maker extraordinaire. 🌱
5. Joh, directing pancake operations. 🥞
6. My little stall, where cowslips, meadowsweet, scabious, campion and more went off to help wildlife in their new homes. 💚
7 - 9 Just some of Sonia's designs requested by our younger visitors. 🤩
