We have more technology, more data, and more information at our fingertips than ever before. But access alone doesn’t move an industry forward. The real shift happens when we know what questions to ask, what ideas to test, and how to turn information into action.

Today I spent the day as a Lab Assistant at Moravian University, shadowing Dr. B. We had students rotate through stations in the ADL lab and the nursing simulation lab.

The ADL lab had 4 sections including:

👉 An area for fasteners and adaptive clothing

The students used large T-shirts and a button hook to simulate hemiplegia dressing. I showed samples from a few of the adaptive clothing lines I have: Spoonie Threads, Sparkies, and MagnaReady. The button hook proved to be difficult and required a lot of precision and a good amount of dexterity to complete properly.

👉 Lower extremity dressing

In a small room with a bed and a chair, the students practiced putting on socks and shoes with a grabber, a dressing hook, and a shoe horn. To aid in this demonstration, I brought the AFO Assist foot funnel, ideal for expanding the heel of your shoe to donn an AFO and Zubits magnetic shoe laces. I did find the DIY sock aid made from a recycled bottle easier to mould in your hands versus the hard plastic type. The sock aid works the best with stretchy hospital or fluffy socks.

We also tried putting on pants, both scrubs and Spoonie's adaptive athletic wear. We discussed how tools like Golden Adaptation's garment glider and On My Own Solutions' My LEDA can aid in this process.

Interestingly enough, we found the mini foot plate lifter I had can also be used as a dressing stick, especially to bring your shirt down in the back or to take off socks and shoes with the hook end. This was a great opportunity to discuss getting in and out of a bed and we explored products like the Bed Ledge, the thigh lifter, a transfer sheet, and a trapeze or bed ladder to help us.

Dedicated to creating stylish, comfortable, and functional clothing for individuals with special needs, SPARKIES serves those facing challenges related to disability and recovery. Established in 2021 by Alina Kuderska, SPARKIES is Alina’s vision is to simplify dressing for both the wearer and their caregivers, fostering accessibility and inclusivity within the fashion industry. Alina graduated with a degree in Fashion Design from the Fashion Institute of Technology and had over a decade of experience in fashion and textile design, working for different fashion companies before launching her own venture with SPARKIES.

SPARKIES have a range designed specifically for people recovering from surgery, those who need assisted dressing or you can choose from their adaptive fashion range. Provided to meet various needs, from comfort before and after surgery. Their items include dresses in soft, lightweight jersey knit fabric and loose styles for comfortable, non restrictive movement as well as leisurewear for rehabilitation support.

Their Assisted Dressing range offers designs for wheelchair users, amputees, and individuals with limited dexterity. They take different body shapes into consideration so everyone can have dignity, support and care. With Tearaway trousers and front fastening tops that ease dressing and wrap dresses with a simple three-snap closure, there is a lot on offer at SPARKIES.
