It’s Banned Books Week.
Sigh.

When I launched the Banned Books Collection, book banning was more like, “A school in Connecticut banned To Kill a Mockingbird because it made some lady uncomfortable! Isn’t that craaazy?”

Now it’s far more insidious and harmful, and is a direct assault on authors of color and the LGBTQ+ community.

So I get that this collection is starting to feel… different. Tacky, even.

But it’s my business and quite a large chunk of my business, at least for now. And small businesses aren’t exactly having an easy time right now.

So at the very least, maybe it’ll raise some awareness. Maybe it’ll make some money for the bookstores that sell them. We regularly donate portions of our sales to literacy organizations, mutual aid, and local libraries. Things are getting darker by the day, but I’ve always tried to be a person who adds whatever literal and figurative light I can to the world.

So let’s support our libraries and bookstores. Buy books. Support small businesses. Support each other. And hold on to whatever shred of joy and hope we can get our hands on.

So, here I am, with a heavy and conflicted heart, bringing you some sorta gross promo for candles.
I don’t know.
If the world is on fire, I guess it might as well smell good.

I’m only a little over halfway done with Moby Dick, and I don’t know what I was expecting, but it was not this. 🙃 I’ve never read a book where the author seems to do whatever he wants. The first ~150ish pages follow a more conventional narrative style, but once the boat embarks on the voyage, there are encyclopedic entries about whales and whaling, about sailor etiquette and what happens when two ships meet on sea. He has chapters written as screenplays. He has a chapter on the meditative state of being assigned the masthead. There’s another one on the color white and its horrifying symbolism. There’s an entire chapter dedicated to eating whale. He is doing whatever he wants!

That said, this book contains some of the most beautiful writing I have ever read. The sentences are long and lingering. There is much of this that is a treatise on man and god (or the devil) and our eternal wrestling with mortality. #monomania

“Yet, when by this collision forced to turn towards home, and for long months of days and weeks, Ahab and anguish lay stretched together in one hammock, rounding in mid winter that dreary, howling Patagonian Cape; then it was, that his torn body and gashed soul bled into one another; and so interfusing, made him mad.”

“Perhaps they were; or pheraps there might have been shoals of them in the far horizon; but lulled into such an opium-like listlessness of vacant, unconscious reverie is this absent-minded youth by the blending cadence of waves with thoughts, that at last he loses his identity; takes the mystic ocean at his feet for the visible image of that deep, blue, bottomless soul, pervading mankind and nature; and everys trange, half-seen, gliding, beautiful thing that eludes him; every dimly-discovered, uprising fin of some indiscernible form, seems to him the emobidment of those elusive thoughts that only peopel the soul by continually flitting through it.” (one long but gorgeous sentence)

I’ve already learned a lot about whales, excited to see what the second half brings.

💅: Moody by Cirque — it’s a magnetic polish and I haven’t quite figured out how that works, but if anyone has tips, let me know!
