Few bits I found on the phone from @weoutherefest. On the Thursday guesting for @speakerscornerquartet’s Arthur Russell celebration show, then stepping out into the crowd to have an incredible musical experience for the rest of the weekend.

As a festival it has all the values that I desperately wish the rest of music industry would have. You get the feeling that the acts are booked by people who actually like music rather than sitting around crunching the same data everyone else is crunching. And I think this ethos bleeds into everything else, the sound, the layout, the food etc..

Met so many heads that were into my music as well. Felt like a proper family affair the whole time I was there. Would love to be back soon and do my own show ⭐️

Had to put together a mix (link in bio) to celebrate the music and people of We Out Here festival. The mix collects everything from jazz to jungle, the rich, varied musical spectrum that helps create the unmistakeable connection between people at WOH. The sense of liminality and collective effervescence is best explained by founder and leading light, DJ Gilles Peterson:

“It takes a village to build a village and it is to all those fellow builders that I want to say thank you… any individual cannot truly exist without being held, seen and supported by a wider group of people…. We’ll explore the values of togetherness that unite the village. While it seems unbelievable to say, this increasingly represents an act of resistance in these fraught times, perhaps even offering an antidote to the rampant individualism that seems to characterise the present day… Whether you’re dancing, performing, working or listening - each and every one of you are the connective tissue that holds the village together and makes it what it is. We are not atomised individuals but members and citizens of a shared space.”

Tracklist and liner notes:

D’Angelo - Africa (Demo Version)
Led by Dave Okumu, the all-star choir and band performing the songs of D’Angelo was a poignant and powerful tribute on Friday afternoon (and the simplicity and beauty of this demo version a perfect mix opener).

Moses Boyd - Come Together
Gilles Peterson’s opening and closing sets both featured this newly released gospel-breakbeat beauty - a perfect encapsulation of the vibe of We Out Here.

Gang Starr - You Know My Steez (Mike Tempo Edit)
I lost my voice for several days after Saturday and can pinpoint vigorously rapping along to the numerous ‘90s hip-hop classics in Sarah Love’s Near Mint tent set as the primary source of my vocal degradation!

Digable Planets x Roots Manuva - Witness the Rebirth (Jim Sharp Blend)
Both tracks that frequently featured over the weekend (along with DP’s inimitable live return) perfectly blended here by the maestro Jim Sharp.

Sampa the Great / Quakers - Approach With Caution (Stalag Riddim)
Sampa is such a versatile emcee and complements a massive range of styles, including here
