Start simply. Detail can always be added.

By its very nature, needlepoint abstracts an image. The grid dictates the shape. Rather than fight that, I choose to lean into it.

How can I play with shape and form to create the most basic silhouette that is still recognizable to people in the know? Many of us who have spent years walking the shoreline have this lighthouse etched in our memories. We could find it in the dark — ironic for a lighthouse.

My first sketches reflect the stripping away of detail. I might add elements back in if I crave a pop of color or a slight visual break. Time will tell. For now, I’m quite happy with the current direction.

Who says quilts have to be square? We ran out of black fabric so skipped the corners altogether.

Michael Graves Design Monthly Delight Feature: Meet Libby

This month we had the pleasure of featuring Libby on our Monthly Delight Q&A Blog!

“Hi! I’m Libby, a business strategist with an art history degree... The mobility issues that I face are a mere footnote to the rest of my life and not a defining quality. I try to convey that in how I share my story.“

Read on to find out more about Libby and her story:

Have you ever written an obituary? What an impossible task to sum up an entire life in a few tidy paragraphs.

I mean, that’s it. That’s the post.

Okay, not really.

Completing this exercise has me wondering how I would like to be remembered and contemplating what kinds of summaries others would choose for their lives.

My mom’s opens describing how her laugh used to fill up a room. I wrote it. I get to choose these things.

If you knew nothing else about her, that’s what you needed to know. And if you were ever on a call with the Zahs, you understand exactly what I mean. Can you still hear her laugh reverberating?

The impact we have on the lives of others isn’t where we worked or how many places we volunteered or the degrees we acquired. It’s how we make people feel. Oh, and quilts. Always quilts.

What would you include in your obituary? What’s your mark on the world? How would you like to be remembered?

P.S. I’m writing her obituary eight months after her death. It’s what I needed in order to find the words. Do what feels right for you. There are no rules.

P.P.S. Yes, those are flamingos on our heads. How else does one celebrate a birthday?

I find myself asking, how many times am I going to rebuild? As many as it takes, I answer.

Never did I anticipate returning to eight hour days of paralysis.

They’re not the same as when this all started over three years ago. Paralysis-light, one might say. I still have use of my hands and can speak, most of the time. I’m not reliant on someone else to rearrange my limbs from the discomfort of lack of movement.

Yet coming out of a phase like this feels like sliding down the board again on this high stakes game of Chutes and Ladders. By no means did I land back at the bottom, but I certainly haven’t completed the game.

But what’s the other option?

I’ll keep rebuilding as many times as it takes because I know with every fiber of my being that the days ahead hold the healthiest, most vibrant version of me that I have ever known.

It will take as long as it takes. Setbacks and roller coaster moments are inevitable. I’ll weather them with some grumbling because, my gosh, I could use a break. Hear that? A reprieve is welcomed!!

So yeah, each day I’ll wake up hoping that I don’t freeze on my return trip from the bathroom, and one of these days it will be true!

And I’ll start rebuilding, yet again.

“Speaking Of Energy” @speakingofenergy #foodbabysoul #foodforthought #truestory It would be my “Pandemic baby” I met in a stroller way back masked. Born to walk up and remind me why we are all here. We are here to live, as long as we can, however long that may be and love. The awards show has the “for those we lost” roll call to remind everyone that we are only here for a New York minute, or a South African “now now”, Perhaps it chills the jets of the egos in the room to remind them that faces end up there, the audience at home recalls feeling the art they were a part of. That is energy. Invisible energy is what helped @theholbertreport little girl connect how pinwheels move. Carol’s energy, my friend who cared about my daughter at camp and boarding school, and me as a mom in between. The energy of Elinore, or Robert’s mom, a neighbor’s sister, and very recently Yellow’s mom. The pinwheels come from celebrating Carol’s life. It was so unexpected that I have a hard time processing it. The pinwheels help me retain empathy in life moving on without our peeps. The electric waves of the grief I stuff finds itself out my eyeball holes, squeaking my speech, so that I have to catch the very breath that keeps me living. Youth like every strand of baby hair on each child’s head is the legacy of all these complicated yet wonderful community of feelings we share about all or nothing. Kids are us. Carol spent years of her life singing with children. It’s no wonder our Miss here spotted the open faced stars. I think of the flower with the eyes and mouth under the train tracks…you know what I am talking about if you doom scroll…Interjecting a little comic relief to a big idea, helps…but knowing time flies and kids grow fast, sad news reports people can be gone instantly. Kids are the reminders to love, teach, sing, hold on, let go, and “be your own best friend.” When one of those pinwheels goes away, it helps believing energy movement is a little “hi!”#domesticgraffitiartist #seedstreetsbrooklyn Grief Has Joy
