Meet ICON MENA’s fashion icons.

Zeina Issa, Islam Nashef, Mise En Place, Special Request and Studiosabbas are five young Arab designers who remain stubbornly, gloriously themselves.

In the great famine of taste and creative discernment, where aesthetic languages converge into a commodity and references flatten, each has followed an idea far enough that it risks becoming alienating, trusting a peculiar reference, an unlikely material, an obsessive technique or an instinct irreducible to words. Ahmed Tohamy’s Special Request has just returned from Copenhagen Fashion Week, where two visitors loved its Latin motto enough to get it tattooed on the spot. The label makes clothes designed to get better with age, using leather from its own tannery, a craft Tohamy inherited from his grandfather, and a fragile linen that wears in as you wear it, with never more than five of any piece. @SceneStyled: Egyptian designer Ahmed Tohamy is questioning what fashion looks like when you take away the pressure to constantly produce, repeat and sell.

Through Special Request, his Berlin-based label built around one-of-one garments and objects, Tohamy treats clothing as wearable art rather than something designed for mass consumption. Bespoke silver hardware, hand-worked leather, distressed finishes, and deliberate imperfections all become part of a process where each piece is made for one person and given the time to become something more permanent.

After years working across the fashion and media industries in Copenhagen and Berlin, Tohamy returned to Cairo and began reconnecting with the craftspeople and workshops that had always existed outside the global fashion spotlight. Special Request became a way to bring those skills into the foreground while challenging the idea that Egyptian craftsmanship needs a European label to validate it.

Wrinkles, creases, natural marks and scars bring forth some of the most beautiful leather compositions.

Exactly how leather ages depends on a lot of factors, a certain designer from the Antwerp 6 said it best for his Leather boots:

“As long as mankind exists, the boot triumphs. Through Sun, rain, dust, the boot stands firm. Durable, made to be worn for a long, long, long time. A boot only acquires its true value when it defies time and “wrinkles.” It reflects the identity of the wearer, forming an extension of the body. Its stitching merges with the twists and turns of the body, its leather slopes over the foot, with identical cracks and irregularities. With every step, with every obstacle overcome together, the skin and the leather become one.”
