OFFSEASON?

Nah. There’s no such thing. Not in my world.

10 years ago, I was a college professor and a bar trivia host named “Matt” who people would mistakenly call Mike or Mark who hosted once or twice a week. I would drive from Jacksonville, FL to Ormond Beach to make $60 bucks to help pay bills for my family.

8 years ago I was hosting 150+ shows a year, adding in ring announcing and in-arena hosting, while still teaching.

5 years ago I was hosting 200+ events per year while teaching high school and chasing a chance to join a team I was obsessed with because I knew they were my people: @thesavbananas .

3 years ago this week, I was named Cast Director for The Savannah Bananas (and eventually @bananaball ). I left teaching, but the real work began.

Now: I just wrapped a season where I performed in front of just shy of 2.5 million people. I’ve helped build a worldwide phenomenon with an incredible team. I finished my book, which is coming out this February to help all hosts and MCs wherever they are in their career. I’m a traveling speaker with multiple dates on the calendar for the next 6 months.

I didn’t go from barrooms to ballparks by taking offseasons. If you want to chase greatness, it takes relentless work. And I am not where I want to be yet, so the work continues. It always will.

Is there sacrifice? Yes.

Is there balance? Not really.

Is it satisfying? God, yes. Exceeding your dreams and then realizing you can go higher is a thrill beyond explanation.

So I’m going to take a few days of R&R. But by late next week, the maintenance work for the rest of this year continues, and the ambitious work for an even bigger 2027 begins.

No offseasons. Just different seasons.

The 2026 @bananaball season has come to close and I am so grateful to be a cast member for this amazing company! I’m so thankful for the opportunities, the friends I’ve made, and the ways I’ve grown this season. What a better way to end the season than to win the BANANA BOWL in Washington D.C. 🏆 I feel so blessed that God led me right to where I belong ❤️

I’ve hosted in front of over 100,000 people—but a crowd that size doesn’t automatically give you their attention.

That experience reinforced something I’ve learned in ballparks, classrooms, barrooms and brawl rooms:

An audience is not something you have. It’s something you continually earn.

These principles don’t belong exclusively to entertainment. They work in meetings, presentations, classrooms, sales pitches and leadership.

Which one does your workplace need most: clearer direction, more participation or a better payoff?
