PLANT LIFE captures Dr. Joanne Chory at a pivotal moment: as her Parkinson’s advances and carbon levels surge, she pursues her most audacious experiment yet.
Having revolutionized plant biology once already, she and her team are re-engineering crops to draw down CO₂ at planetary scale — a scientific race against time that may determine both her legacy and our future. “Plant Life” plays at @alpenglowsports Mountainfilm on Tour on October 16th, 2026. There are just 41 more presale tickets before we are completely sold out! Join us at @mountainfilm on Tour North Lake Tahoe, we cannot wait to gather as a community and witness these special films. So darn thrilled to be heading to @camdeniff and @climatefilmfestnyc this weekend with our new film Plant Life. Two incredible festivals.

And if you’re in NYC, you can also catch my co-director @onlyhumanfilm & I at the @the_explorers_club for another @climateweek screening on Tues 9/22 at 5pm + a chat afterwards with the @salkinstitute scientists behind it.

Very proud of this film, many years in the making — and so very honored to learn it was just recently nominated for a few incredible awards at @wildscreenorg @jacksonwildorg @silbersalzfestival @impactdocsawards

Huge thanks to Joanne, her, family, and the cadre of brilliant scientists at HPI — and everyone at @salkinstitute for trusting us behind the scenes.

Can’t say thank you enough to @tangledbankhhmi @catapultfilmfund @berkeleyfilmfoundation @theredfordcenter for helping us make it all happen — and especially to everyone who worked so hard on the film. @photophilbriggs @ddonaa @media_rat @steffseq @chad.cohen007 @globalmechanic @brucewgalcock amandacomposer @edwardsdan @jeremiahmoore @umami.color @armincreates @springerdocs @biolapse @speculativefilms

Though on different landscapes, in some ways very much a spiritual sequel to our last film Eco-Hack! about a zany field biologist out in the Mojave — both films about incredibly clever scientists trying to solve some of the most challenging ecological problems facing our planet, with hard science and/or quirky gadgets, big and small. You can also catch Eco-Hack!, just released by @nonfictionhotlist and @yahoo … Very excited for both to be finally getting out into the world.

Congratulations to Outstanding Achievement winner Brett Marty and Josh Izenberg for their deeply moving documentary short, "Plant Life"! The film offers an intimate look at biologist Joanne Chory, who has spent her life unlocking the secrets of plants. Now, facing advancing Parkinson’s disease, she is pushing forward with the most audacious research of her career: re-engineering crops to pull carbon from the atmosphere and lock it deep in the soil, with the potential to cut the pace of climate change in half. Through artful direction and intimate observation, Marty and Izenberg bring us close to Chory’s fierce intelligence, vulnerability, and enormous heart. It is a powerful race against time and an exhilarating testament to a remarkable woman determined to leave the world better than she found it. Executive produced by Emmy-winner Chad Cohen. As climate change accelerates and her Parkinson’s disease advances, pioneering plant biologist Joanne Chory races to complete the most ambitious experiment of her career: re-engineering crops capable of drawing carbon from the atmosphere and storing it deep within the soil. PLANT LIFE follows Chory at a pivotal moment, capturing both a deeply personal journey and a scientific effort that could reshape our collective future.

Blending intimate portraiture with urgent environmental inquiry, the film traces the legacy of a scientist who transformed the field of plant biology and now believes the key to confronting the climate crisis may lie beneath our feet.

Directors Brett Marty and Josh Izenberg are award-winning filmmakers whose work spans documentary, environmental storytelling, and portraiture. Their previous films have screened at Cannes, Tribeca, Hot Docs, and SXSW, with projects featured by Patagonia, The New Yorker, Netflix, National Geographic, and The New York Times.

It’s official! Our new doc project Plant Life received a @CatapultFilmFund Development Grant. Massive thanks to everyone at Catapult! #CatapultDevelopment2023 (link in bio)

“Plant geneticist Dr. Joanne Chory and her lab are on a mission — supercharging crop plants to pull carbon from the atmosphere and sequester it deep in Earth’s soil, potentially halving the pace of climate change. But time is running out. And it’s not just the ticking clock of ecological collapse: Dr. Chory’s has advanced Parkinson’s disease.” Catapult Film Fund Development Grant 2023
