Our sweet Samuel Peter…. As you turn 12, know that we
love your wisdom and joy, touchdown throws and bowling skills, and your dry wit and silly nature. (But what we really love and treasure are your hugs and heart and spirit.) Thank you for loving us all and being so willing to help, especially with all of the dogs that come to visit. 😊 You are truly loved beyond measure, dear boy, and your life is a gift from God. May your life be filled with joy always (including delicious ramen and the best vanilla ice cream). Being your mom is one of my very favorite things, and I love this journey of life with you. ❤️

I know that a heart is capable of holding many feelings at once…and the beauty of being human means that we have the ability to give and receive love. What joy to have had a father who loved with his whole heart, laughed with me, cried with me, and was always such a rock. In truth, I felt a tad untethered this Father’s Day, with the welling up of grief catching me by surprise…

So it was good that we took Max to his camp at my Alma Mater because I was able to remember many such road trips (and loading and unloading of my old Dodge truck) with my dad. How we used to sing songs off-key, stop for fries, and both marvel at the mountains that God made. Gosh how he loved my roommates, too, and would often leave little messages on the answering machine. He was just that kind of dad.

And he loved Tom dearly, for he knew the heart of my husband, and how much Tom loved his boys. What a gift, and honor, really, to be deeply loved by these two wonderful men. I am forever in awe of the capacity for love and how, even after death, love remains and echoes and resounds.

Veni, Sacnte Spiritus.🕊️ I am now officially confirmed in the Catholic Church. ✝️ I am forever grateful for the love and generosity of our Lord, as well as the Blessed Mother and the all of the Saints. I chose Maximilian Kolbe as my confirmation saint, and he is also my baptismal/patron saint. His life, teachings, and writings are incredibly beautiful, and are definitely something to look into and live by. Thank you to all who have been present in my spiritual journey, and a special thank you to Daniel ( @hollywddan ) for being my sponsor and Lauren ( @lauren.rva ) for being my proxy (because Daniel had to play the organ, which he always does beautifully). And of course to my parents, teachers/mentors, and friends as well. I look forward to see what God has planned for me in my future. God bless.🙏

Dearest Joe, Daddy and I believe in miracles. And we believe in them specifically because you came roaring into our lives when we needed you most. You were prayed for and loved before we got to hold you, and now that we know you? Well. We love you more than words. How proud we are of what you are doing and also for who you are. Thank you, thank you, for being so good to your brothers. (As long as I’m living, my baby you’ll be. 💕)

*p.s. Sorry this is late. But to be fair, labor started on St. Patrick’s Day, and it took two days for you to be born. 🙃☘️ But you needed to come on St. Joesph’s Day…. It fits you, as he is the patron saint of workers.

Two years without you, dad, and you are missed more than ever. Your hugs, your care, and your laughter were the most treasured things.

(But as I look into the faces of my boys, I see you still.) And you are remembered. Today at Mass, Max and I sang this beautiful hymn… my prayer is that it lifted to you into the heavens. For on this first week of Advent, the week of HOPE, I do hope “that you need no lamp or sun, and that Christ will be your all.” ❤️

“Rejoice in heaven, all ye that dwell within
Rejoice on earth, ye saints below
For Christ is coming, is coming soon
For Christ is coming soon
E’en so Lord Jesus, quickly come
And night shall be no more
They need no light nor lamp nor sun
For Christ will be their All!”

Today, we give considerable credit to our Joe for figuring out how to get us to see Old Faithful in time… It is something to see in person, for sure! And the rest of the thermal springs and pools were amazing to behold… bubbling and steaming and creating a beautiful alien landscape. Several of the residents welcomed us too!

Yesterday, our Jenny Lake hike took us to Hidden Falls and Inspiration Point, and the majestic views did not disappoint. Everywhere we turned, beauty filled our senses and reminded us of the grandeur of this place.
•
(Be sure to check my stories for our whitewater rafting adventure that followed!) Our days are filled with laughter and wandering, and we couldn’t love jt more!

Dearest Max,
As we complete another year around the sun, and celebrate your 15th birthday, please know how very much you are loved. What a gift from God you are! How fitting it is that we are in this wild and beautiful place on this special day, because you are indeed “King of the Wild Things”… (Although, I’m kinda glad that we didn’t need to use the Bear Spray. That would’ve been a completely different adventure). Thank you for pointing out birds and bugs, snakes, and rocks, and for helping to keep wonder alive. “And now, let the wild rumpus start!” ❤️

With water and sun, wind and paddles, we made our way down the Snake River. For those of us who needed help with balancing (yes, it was me 🤭) the water was quite chilly, but felt wonderful, too. Adventurous boys made use of the rope swing, and the current carried us when we were tired.
•
Ending the day with a rodeo allowed us all to dream of being cowboys and riding off into the sun….

We started the day with the gift of family, and we were incredibly blessed to see @hcgardner and her sweet children as we toured the Olympic village…
•
Then, family connection continued as we met up with @mwebb713 and fam and entered into the beautiful state of Idaho.
•
it’s just different here…. Slowing down, catching up, laughing and watching the stars, we can enter into rest in a new and unique way. (As Melissa pointed out, it looked an awful lot like Christmas morning, since the boys were unwrapping and assembling fly rods and setting up reels.) I have to say that watching my husband and children do the set up for fly fishing just as my Grandpa Krystofik and Uncle Tony did so many years ago…. How lovely, indeed… Family. Continued.

Sunrise, sunset….. swiftly flow the days, indeed.
•
Today, we hiked in Bryce Canyon and completed the beautiful Sunset to Sunrise point loop. We saw two peregrine falcons wheeling above, as well as chipmunks, jays, and juncoes. (And the fact that trees seem to grow out of nothing still surprises us.) As we were completing the last mile, the wind picked up as thunderstorms gathered around us and pushed us on. We made it to the car as the heavens opened and we cheered heartily.
•
I need to also encourage you to please, please, please visit a National Park and show your support for these beautiful spaces. On our trip, all of the Rangers and employees have been marvelous, but staffing is an issue, and several exhibits were shut down. It was especially distressing to see the closure of an indigenous site… America the beautiful needs you.
