“The Bar as Datum”

At @sansan.elevatedasian , the bar is conceived less as furniture and more as an architectural datum.

A singular oxblood volume cuts through the room, establishing a precise horizontal axis against the weight of the ceiling above. Stainless steel, dark timber and high-gloss lacquer meet through controlled junctions — mass against precision, reflection against texture.

Overhead, the ceiling folds inward, almost compressing itself around a linear incision of light. Illumination is embedded into the architecture rather than applied onto it, drawing attention to edges, surfaces and moments of transition.

The bar becomes both object and infrastructure — simultaneously theatrical and functional, choreographing movement around its elongated geometry.

Rather than ornament, SAN SAN works through proportion, repetition and material tension.
Here, function becomes form.
And the bar becomes the room’s longest line.

Congratulations to @tatlerasia and the entire editorial, jury and organising teams for bringing together such a thoughtful celebration of India’s hospitality landscape, recognising the country’s Best Restaurants, Best Bars and Best Hotels.

It was wonderful to see the people and places shaping contemporary Indian hospitality receive the recognition they deserve. On a personal note, it was an immensely proud moment for us @speedxbars to see that 16 of the 20 Best Bars recognised by Tatler were built by our team. A quiet but deeply meaningful reminder of the trust India’s finest bar creators have placed in us over the years.

@freddywho.delhi begins with the idea that the bar is not placed within the room, the room is constructed around the bar.

A continuous mass of deeply veined stone establishes the primary datum, folding horizontally and vertically to become counter, edge, enclosure and circulation simultaneously. Its exaggerated geometry gives the compact footprint a deliberate sense of permanence.

Above, the ceiling is dematerialised into a mirrored grid. Bottles, light, movement and material are repeated overhead, creating a second inverted architecture that visually extends the bar beyond its physical limits.

The dialogue between weight and reflection becomes the spatial device: stone grounds the room while mirror dissolves it. Oxblood lacquer, polished timber profiles and illuminated shelving sit between the two, creating a tightly controlled architecture of layers.

Okay, this one made me a little too excited, fair warning!

This electric tandoor hits 379°C like it’s nothing and just when you think that’s the party trick, it switches to coal too, for that proper smoky, char-grilled flavour whenever you’re in the mood. Skewers went in, came out sizzling and perfect!

And then the pizza oven stole the show! The base plate spins on its own while the pizza bakes evenly inside, up to 12” of cheesy, bubbly goodness, no flipping, no fuss.🙌🏻

Basically, my kitchen had main character energy today!✨ @speedxbars
