I’ve dedicated the last decade of my life to this sport. I gave it everything I had, but after multiple injuries, it became clear that my body wasn’t going to allow me to continue.

This sport is humbling. I didn’t get the ending I dreamed of, and there will always be what ifs, but I can’t let that overshadow everything this sport gave me. I’ve learned that no matter how hard you work, you’re not entitled to anything. The sport doesn’t owe you success. Determination, discipline, and sacrifice defined my athletic career. The early mornings, late nights, strict routines, and countless sacrifices were all part of pursuing the best version of myself.

Thank you to my parents for teaching me the value of hard work and sacrifice, and thank you to every coach who believed in me along the way. From High School, to Indian Hills, to Iowa, and finally Pitt State, I was around coaches who invested in me both as an athlete and as a person. Because of them, I was able to compete at levels I once only dreamed about.

The ending of my career has been difficult to process. I tore my labrum halfway through the best season of my career. I returned after surgery but couldn’t stay healthy long enough to train and compete consistently. Multiple stress fractures prevented me from accomplishing the goals I had for myself at Pitt State.

I’ll always wonder what could have been, but also understand what this sport gave me. I learned that satisfaction is hard to find. Every time I achieved a goal, I wanted more. That’s simply just the name of the game.

Lastly, and most importantly, this sport gave me far more than just awards and success. In 2021, I met the love of my life. Isabelle and I got to compete for the same college for 1 year and it was the best year of my life. She has been by my side through the highs, lows, injuries, and everything in between. I will forever be grateful that this sport brought us together.

I hope people remember me as someone who gave everything he had to become the best athlete and person possible.

It has been one hell of a ride❤️

Pain is growth, and growth is pain.

This sport is unique in that it relies solely on raw athletic ability. There’s no teammate to block a tackle, nobody to pass to, nobody else to rely on in the moment. It’s you and the clock. It’s you vs yourself. And that quickly becomes a terrifyingly arduous quest that has no end in sight. Over and over again you work your body to its limit just to reach a time or mark you’re unsatisfied with. Even when you reach a personal best, there’s still that nagging feeling that wants more. Push a little harder, shave off that quarter of a second, jump a bit higher. Whatever it may be, it feels like a curse. But in truth, it isn’t. It is our source for growth. And we grow not only as athletes, not only as teammates, but as human beings. It is the art of failing and picking ourselves back up that is the human experience. So be kind to yourself, and be kind to others.

I am forever indebted to those who believed in me from the get go. To the Mid Distance guys, Coach Wakenight, Coach Roe, Coach Potter, my family, my friends, to Floor 7, and to my girlfriend Rachel, thank you for the faith you’ve instilled in me over the years.

With all this being said, my track career has come to an end. And I leave you with the words of poet John Milton:

“Calm of mind, all passion spent.”

Go Hawks. Forever and always.
