I learnt so much shooting this gorgeous film for @friendsofcoverhamchurch for the inaugural @sustainablechurchflowers conference a few weeks ago. It’s really inspiring to see people taking action and making changes especially in old institutions like the Church of England which can be easily stuck in their ways 🌷

Shot and edited by me 💅

Zanna here from @spindleflowers, proudly flying the Southwest Flower Grower Collective (SWFGC) flag this week.

Spindle is located on the Dorset / Devon border just inland from Charmouth. At 100m altitude, with plentiful water, south facing and sheltered, we are lucky 🍀 and can grow almost anything.

The soil is loamy clay but very stony. Digging a hole in this ground is hard work! So 11 years ago now we put in lots and lots of bare root trees & shrubs.

Back in 2014 I planned for it to be predominantly a foliage farm, but for about 6 years I grew flowers too. I still have some of the perennials - they’re old friends - but many of the annuals beds are returned to grass now.

‘Farm’ is quite a grand word for our 1.5acre plot. As a florist, i just wanted to experiment with lots of different trees and shrubs. I’ve ended up with a plant library, a great teaching tool, an oasis of calm, but NOT an easily harvestable site. Different varieties of cretaegus are nestled in next to rampant pittosporum which love the sheltered environment.

We are undertaking more pollarding and coppicing these days, to manage the foliage crops so that they are reachable and harvestable. Keeping them in this juvenile state has the added benefit of increased carbon sequestration. Biodiversity, agro-ecology, whatever you want to call it. Nature is, and always has been front and centre.

Many thanks for being part of the #britishflowers journey with us, and for reading this far!

I’m proud of my small, wholesale foliage growing business, made more efficient by the SWFGC.

What we’ve achieved with the Collective is astonishing really, in such a relatively short time and I’m excited for what it has yet to bring!

Meet our tutor Zanna Hoskins from @spindleflowers and join her on 9 August for an enjoyable and informative day of floristry suitable for a special event.

With over 10 years of experience and a deep commitment to British-grown flowers, Zanna brings her unique approach to sustainable floristry—think meadow-picked flowers, hedgerow finds, together with locally grown flowers and foliage to create beautifully wild arrangements.

In this one-day workshop, you will forage from our wildflower meadow, woodland and hedgerows, then create stunning centrepieces using your own vase and natural, biodegradable materials. From compact designs to flowing table runners, you will learn skills to continue your floristry long after the day ends.

Perfect for beginners and those with previous experience

In late May of this year, we had the privilege of flowering a beautiful and moving memorial service at St James’s Church, Piccadilly.

To be invited to create flowers in this beautiful Christopher Wren church with all its history and loving outreach for a life so beautifully and creatively lived was a very special commission.

We designed scaled urns with sensitivity to both the setting and the wonderful person being celebrated using our all English stems plus those kindly donated by @spindleflowers and @floristonflowerfarm , both friends of the family who wanted to contribute as a mark of their love for the life that had passed.

Working quietly as the family and friends, devestated by grief , went through their readings, poems and stories before the service began, all within the warmth of the St James’s embrace is not something any of us will forget. It was Cointhinans 13 writ large - ‘and the greatest of these is love.’

Working with flowers brings the most profoundest and unexpected of moments and ones that reach deep into all our common humanities.

Spend a peaceful day connecting with nature and learning traditional floristry skills. Join Zanna Hoskins on 9 August from @spindleflowers for a comprehensive foraging and floristry workshop.

See comments for link

Combined with locally sourced flowers, you will gather seasonal blooms from our wild flower meadow, hedgerows and woodland before creating beautiful table centerpieces in our workshop. Using your own favourite vase plus natural biodegradable materials like moss, twigs, and even cucumber, you will learn to make both compact arrangements and elegant long table runners.

The focus is on celebrating the subtle beauty of British flora - those delicate seed heads and seasonal colours that make each arrangement truly distinctive.

You will leave with unique pieces that reflect your personal style, plus the knowledge to continue creating at home.

🌸 BLOOM & WRAP – Workshop Highlights 🌸

Last night’s Bloom & Wrap workshop was pure floral magic 💫

Surrounded by the scent of incredible British-grown blooms – many from our own patch, plus beauties from the @swflowergrowercollective (two of their growers @ellas_flower_farm & @spindleflowers), and Emily at @rosacheney – we created, connected, and celebrated the art of floristry together 🌿💐

The creativity, colour, and community were unforgettable – and your stunning wraps, we’re still in awe! Thank you Clare from @clareabeaus_ for providing the stunning venue too.

✨ Fancy joining us next time? Our workshops are more than just flowers – they’re a moment to slow down, get hands-on, and leave with something beautiful (and wildly fragrant!).

Keep an eye out – the next date is coming soon...

Beauty bush - Kolkwitzia- is a new favourite flowering shrub. But last week it was the lilac. This week the deutzia is magnificent and the spirea too! Then there’s the budding delphiniums, the flowering dogwood, the beautiful weigela … sigh… 😆

Lizzie @puggsmeadowflowers and I spent many hours in the vans yesterday, delivering to various florists @swflowergrowercollective @ravenshillflowerfarm @millefleurpearl @commonfarmflowers @fleur_provocateur @figandbramble_

While we’re really glad of the orders - thank you to all the florists who champion British Flowers, it genuinely makes us happy to share our floral loot with creatives who GET it - i think I can speak for Lizzie too, when I say I also just wanted to lie down on the grass in the warm sunshine on a stunning May day and gaze at the daisies!

All worth it though, to share our love of #britishflowers

I am not sure what I have done over the years with out my Lizzie @puggsmeadowflowers .... it's been a marriage and I freely admit her growing talent is a huge part of my business. I have always loved using British flowers and I am proud to stand on a bucket and shout about the incredible @swflowergrowercollective.

The South West Flower Collective is a group of fabulous growers who deserve our support as florists... Supporting them means I can now have even more of my favourite seasonal blooms at a click of a button. Their Hub is an online shop which opens 6pm every Thursday for collection the following week. The online shop is open from Thursday to Monday. Dm them for more info.

This wonderful delight filling the studio today ... @whiteparkflowers @ellas_flower_farm @spindleflowers @puggsmeadowflowers @dorsetflowerco

So, support this incredible collective...

Being a small scale flower farmer is all about collaboration. When you get a big order accept it, and find local growers to help you fulfill that order. Here over 3000 stems for this weekend’s flower festival at @thenewtinsomerset near Bruton in Somerset. I grew about 1000 here at @commonfarmflowers then called in help from @thetetburyflowerco @swflowergrowercollective whose members @dorsetflowerco @whiteparkflowers @littlefordfarmflowers @spindleflowers and @puggsmeadowflowers contributed, and of course the ever reliable @highcroftnurseries joined in the mix too.
Seems apt to have this post to share today as I take up my responsibilities as joint external chair of @flowersfromthefarm with @marlston_farmgirl as my co worker in the role. Onwards and upwards all we flower growers I say! Let’s save the planet one small scale flower farm at a time xxx
