Ep. 9 of “Off the Top”: Seth Lorinczi, Circus Lupus

Seth Lorinczi has worn many hats over his bald pate. Member of D.C. art punk originators Circus Lupus and West Coast heroes the Quails. Psychedelic experiencer and author of “Death Trip: A Post-Holocaust Psychedelic Memoir.” And currently at work on a history of the iconic venue D.C. Space. Seth shows up to talk about what it’s like to grow up goth-curious and what it’s like to look like a lumberjack. Also: Justin contemplates going to a D.C. “bald meet-up.” Listen at the “link in bio.”

What a blast to bring Tony Fletcher down to DC to talk up his new memoir, POW! You can view the whole talk on my Substack “Dispatches From the Fringe,” but here’s a wee clip of one of my favorite moments….

Love always,
Seth

Do secret backyard shows kind of weird you out? ME TOO! From the “give us your money and we’ll tell you where it is” thing to the possibility it will just be kind of sad, I’ve kind of stayed away. This time around, I’m glad I didn’t.

Read all about it, only at my Substack Dispatches From the Fringe….

Love always,
Seth

When I stumbled into the DC punk scene, I was desperate to know what bands and art were okay to be into, which were off-limits. To understand where the walls were.

But it wasn’t quite that simple. The world I discovered was—like Washington itself—impossibly diverse. And in its way, it was captured perfectly in a single publication: GREED.

The original print run was 1986-89, but now GREED is back online. Here’s the little-told story, with a trigger warning: Copy machines will die.

Find it only on my Substack, Dispatches From the Fringe.

Love always,
Seth

TONIGHT! IT’S HAPPENING!

Will Tony Fletcher (pictured here in 1983) play guitar for you? No.

Will Tony Fletcher explain Sleaford Mods for you? No.

Will Tony Fletcher reveal Adam Ant’s top-secret vegan cheesecake recipe? No.

But I can promise you this: If you give half a damn about the explosion of creativity known as “Post-Punk” in the UK, you will be abundantly rewarded. As a wee teenager, Tony not only navigated this world but became a crucial voice in it. And in just a few hours, I’ll be joining him at Politics and Prose (Union Market) to discuss his just-released “POW! When UK Punk Went Pop.”

Doors at 7, middle-aged hipsters!

Love always,
Seth

One of the great pleasures of this stage of life is circling back and reconnecting with people I shared space with years ago. I met J. Robbins at my second-ever job (Olsson’s in Georgetown!) and loved him from the start. Even after he forcibly removed Big Black’s “Jordan, MN” from the turntable feeding the PA (What? I just thought everyone should get a chance to hear it).

So what a treat to see both him and @sugarcopperblue play ripping sets the other night. Love you, @jrobbinsofficial !

People!

I’m thrilled to finally share one of my favorite untold stories from the D.C. punk scene. It stars Alec Bourgeois—seen above in wee baby form, circa 1985 with his band Cereal Killer—and it could only have happened in D.C. Here’s the drift:

As a punk kid living on D.C.’s Capitol Hill, Alec was used to getting heckled. But when he walked by the liquor store with his guitar, he never expected what one of the dudes hanging out there would say:

“You heard of George Clinton? P-Funk? Yeah? I play with those guys!”

Yeah, right.

But he wasn’t lying. It was Eddie Hazel: The man behind one of the most transcendent guitar solos ever recorded. On Maggot Brain’s 55th anniversary, this is the heartbreaking story of what happened next….

Find it at my Substack: Dispatches From the Fringe (link in bio).

Seth

Do you remember when a simple plastic toy was enough to keep you occupied for hours?

Corin Tucker does. As a kid growing up in North Dakota, fun was where you made it. So when the Whirly Tube—aka the corrugaphone, or bloogle resonator, or Free-Ka (what?)—entered her world, it made a big impression. “It sounded like a tunnel to me, of going somewhere, and translating a feeling,” she says, and it helped implant a love of sound that’s carried her pretty damn far.

In today’s installment of the extremely irregular Sound Surrounds column, Corin and I talk about the impact of this frankly kind of silly toy, the joys of making challenging sounds, and—why not?—John Cale.

Stick THAT in your tube and smoke it. Find it on my Substack, Dispatches From the Fringe (link in bio).

Love always,
Seth

Remember when Slint’s “Spiderland” dropped and suddenly it was okay for boys to cry? Incredibly, that was 35 years ago, but you can drop back in with the most recent episode of @lifeoftherecord and today's post on my Substack, Dispatches From the Fringe (link in bio).

Love always,
Seth.

There's no delicate way to say this, so here goes:

WHAT MAKES A MAN SHIT IN A BOOKSTORE?

To be fair, we don’t know it was a man (though, come on). But it definitely happened. Today’s noirish, admittedly fanciful story is based on a heinous (and still-unsolved) string of crimes in the early ‘90s DC punk scene. And for better or worse, it’s now been published in book form.

J. Hunter Bennett's "More Punk than the Public Library" came out this week! And if you’re in DC, you can celebrate its release tomorrow, Saturday, May 16, at Politics and Prose.

And you can read the original piece right now at my Substack, Dispatches From the Fringe (link in bio).

Love always,
Seth
