CW: brief mention of state violence. Drawing is a repost from 2020. We must never stop recognizing all of the intersections of peoples lives - especially when those lives are more susceptible to state violence. People with Disabilities are not disposable, and are not a monolith. We need to use all the access tools we can, because everyone deserves access to information. Please check out slide 2, and then go to @spoonieuniproject’s page for more info on how you can support! [Image Description: Series of 2 graphics Slide one: Image with a white background and black text. Text with very terrible handwriting from using my left hand reads “Roses are red violets are blue [Please use alt text image IDs, CWs, and captions] Because Black Disabled Lives Matter, too!” There’s a hand drawn red rose with a black outline next to the line about roses. There is a HIGHER_PRIESTESS tag at the bottom center of the graphic in a computer font. Disclaimer : This post, and Revival Disability Magazine in no way promotes firecrackers. However, this is Sumegha's narrative and an effort on the part of the family to actively include her in the celebrations, an aspect of which involves fireworks in the sky. This Diwali szn, Revival Disability Magazine presents narratives from folks who describe their ideal accessible Diwali : a Diwali that is comfortable and enjoyable to all - The story of my Accessible Diwali. #AccessibleWaliDiwali Diwali is accessible when our family respects and acknowledges our needs and requirements. Accessibility isin't only confined to physical spaces, but shows in attitudes and behaviours that are accommodating and empathetic : Diwali is a time to embrace and include all types of bodies and abilities in festivities, and celebrate the victory of good over evil : This year has been horrifying and it's definitely time to remind ourselves how far we have come and learn to be kinder to ourselves. Sumegha (@sumeghaginodia) writes a heartwarming tale of how her family arranged accessible Diwali celebrations for her so that she wouldn't feel left out due to her hip relocation surgery : "When I was a preteen, I’d had a surgery right before Diwali. I was in a full body cast, below the shoulders, and bed ridden. My wonderful family tactfully draped ghagra over the cast, burrito style. Brought out a children’s cot, (the only bed with wheels) loaded me up in it, then carried the cot with me in it down a flight of stairs, into the building compound, just so I wouldn’t miss out on the crackers. Some lights really do illuminate the important things." In bright orange text, Revival Disability Magazine written on top. In the background, bright diwali sky lanterns can be scene against the night sky. A picture of a burrito is also seen, which relates to Sumegha's narrative : "When I was a preteen, I’d had a surgery right before Diwali. Some lights really do illuminate the important things." A picture of Sumegha can be seen, I'm a beautiful light pink diwali salwar suit, with her puppy in her arms. She is gleaming at the camera.
