Bori Wikén aint even here yet, and the spaces I’ve been able to grace, the knowledge I’ve been able to acquire and the beautiful, BEAUTIFUL people I’ve been able to meet have surpassed my expectations of what this month would be like. I have many to thank for these opportunities (and I will) and a heart exploding with joy and security in myself I haven’t felt in so long. I have never grown up with this culture; I have never listened to salsa before age 13, worn my colors, or known my history like I do now. It wasn’t until now that I could speak to my people in our language: our rhythmic Spanglish that bridges our heart from one island to another over 1000 miles away.

We all wish our families never got displaced from the island so we can know it well, but god damn were we able to create something beautiful. We will learn it nonetheless because we WILL get to go back. But for now: From salsa to hip hop; from bomba to freestyle, Nuyorico has it all and was a part many of their creations. WE CREATED THE PUERTO RICAN FLAG! Did you know that?!

Im so happy to share this community with you all, mi gente. Thank you for bringing out the fire in a no sabo kid who wanted nothing more than to feel this love.
