Purge Dir. Andrew Hamilton Following its world premiere at Fantasia International Film Festival in Montreal, Purge follows Gee (Zara Jestadt), a struggling screenwriter who participates in an experimental drug trial to escape her depression, only to be left questioning whether the person in the mirror is still her. As we follow Gee’s journey through a series of rejections to screenwriting fellowship programmes, the pressure placed on her relationship with partner Finch (Isabella Shibuta) is evident. Cracks are forming in Gee’s ability to maintain composure, allowing the anxiety and depression to seek into her everyday life, leaving her unable to function. Following enrolment in a pharmaceutical trial, Gee’s armed with a prescription for Brightnol, and she experiences a wealth of unexpected physical and behavioural changes. Purge is a film that holds the debilitating nature of depression at its core; balancing heartbreaking performances and striking visual representations of symptoms some in a depressive state can exhibit. It’s a sharply focused story that delves into the subject of mental health, using a character who struggles to achieve goals in a creative field as a trigger for pre-existing thoughts and emotions deep seeded in her childhood. Invoking aspects of body horror to flesh out these internal battles in the final act is a great choice, allowing genre fans to enjoy more than the harrowing subject matter at hand. It poses an interesting question about how creativity could be formed from darkness and explores the complexities of the human condition. There’s also a monkey’s paw complexity to the narrative. The old adage ‘be careful what you wish for’ lingers over the proceedings and come the finale, we conclude this may not end well. I’m always blown away by how filmmakers can deliver complex themes and intricate storytelling in a short film. Purge is a shining example of how this format can deliver on every level; from the gorgeous cinematography to the impactful score this film shines. I’d like to thank Producer Torrin Blades for sharing the screener with me. #purge #horrorfilm #shortfilm #filmreview #indiehorror
