POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

What happens to books when the LitFest is over?
We tracked down some after-effects of one book from one event at this years LitFest -
Dear Historian by Joff Winterhart.

‘Just when I thought I couldn’t love Joff Winterhart more, along came Dear Historian. It has all the wry humanity and keen eye for detail that won Driving Short Distances and Days of the Bagnold Summer such passionate fans’ So says LitFest Patron Patrick Gale, who invited Joff Winterhart to Penzance and interviewed him to the delight of the audience.

Book sales were brisk at the event, with Joff signing - and drawing - in each individual book. One of those signed was for a member of the Litfest organising team who says “Joff drew as we chatted, cats came into the conversation and one suddenly appeared. It was extraordinary to see the story we were discussing appear on the page like magic”.

Joff showed us who had inspired the characters in Dear Historian including Muriel Spark, which led us to searching for books about Muriel Spark….

Then there was the Cornwall based artist who didn’t think the event was for her, but came along and ended up buying the book and recommending it to fellow artists.

And a Litfest attendee who couldn’t make that event, but bought the book from the Waterstones bookstall in the Acorn, took it home (outside Cornwall), asked her local libraries to buy a copy, which they did, and it’s been out on loan, with people waiting, ever since.

Do you have a story to tell us about the after-effects of any of the books from the Litfest? We love hearing bookish stories….

📚I have to read (a lot) for work (seriously, a LOT!), but here are two books I recently read for pleasure.

📚Both graphic novels, both exceptional examples of a form that is constantly evolving and shapeshifting in the most interesting ways, both incredibly stimulating in the depth of their engagement with human relationships, both highly, highly recommended!

Joff Winterhart is up there with Tim Bird for me as one of the masters of comic book melancholy. ‘Dear Historian’ was everything I hoped it would be when I saw that he’d published a new book.

Like ‘Driving Short Distances’ and ‘Days of the Bagnold Summer’ before that, ‘Dear Historian’ features an inter-generational odd couple. Aging academic Margaret and TV producer Lucy find in each other something they seem to need. That’s it.

Winterhart creates such vivid and believable characters. They may be monochrome sketches but they have such beautifully human flaws and traits that it’s impossible for them to stay on the page. Funny, sad, awkward and so well observed, ‘Dear Historian’ is Winterhart doing what he does best. I loved it.
