Week number 22 of our weekly devotional!

Revelation 3:15-16 “I know thy works, that thou art neither cold nor hot: I would thou wert cold or hot. So then because thou art lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot I will spue thee out of my mouth.”

Admittedly this week’s devotional is also a personal message to myself when needed. It seems like nowadays we’ve become complacent and we’ve accepted the fact that being lukewarm is acceptable. In a world where we are told compromise is the new normal and as long as we are “good enough” it’s acceptable. I for one and tired of being lukewarm. We should wake up each and every day on fire for the Gospel and be proud of what Jesus has done in our lives. It’s time for us to be unapologetic for our faith and who we find hope in.

In a world where compromise is around each and every corner it’s time we become unashamed of the Gospel of Jesus Christ and put him first in our lives!

Have a great week and tell someone about Jesus!!

This Turkey Tuesday is about gobbling, which is an activity toms do all year long – including during fall. The other day, I was scrolling through cell camera images and saw a series that included several toms, and one image clearly showed a tom gobbling. That took me back decades to when I was deer hunting as a child and had a tom gobbling his head off most of the afternoon while I sat hoping (fruitlessly) to see a deer. So, what prompts a tom to gobble, sometimes quite a bit, during the fall? Well, ebbs and flows in testosterone result in some toms getting fired up enough in fall to start gobbling, particularly when around other toms. Unlike during spring when testosterone levels get high enough for toms to gobble daily, during fall you typically see one bird in a flock gobble whereas others do not. You’ll also see certain toms in a flock gobble at times but there may be no consistency to who gobbles and when. Regardless, gobbling around other toms in the same flock during fall is primarily a way to assert dominance and challenge other flock members. We think of spring as a time when toms focus on dominance, but the battles to establish dominance occur throughout fall and winter in the flocks we’re seeing. The take home is gobbling during the fall is a behavior that gets the ball rolling on seeing who will stand at the top of the dominance ladder come spring. Anyone been seeing or hearing toms gobble? “I have a question for each of you. Why are you here? What brings you here tonight? If it’s not your concern and love for the wild turkey, you’re probably in the wrong place” - Ron Jolly

Ron Jolly (left) and Joey Thiel (right) enjoying some turkey talk at the TFT Town Hall in Georgia, about how @turkeysfortomorrow is looking for the answers to help conserve this bird we all love.
As Jolly says frequently in response to the answers, or lack there of, we currently have regarding the 39% decline of the wild turkey over the past decade… “that’s not good enough”.

Our little farm in Alabama averaged 60 birds in our winter flock. When it got less than a dozen my wife looked and me and said ‘you gotta do something’. That’s how she makes her living. Photographing turkeys”. - Ron Jolly

“TFT came to me on a broader scale when I kept getting this little kick in the back of my hard head saying ‘pay attention. Look where you came from. Look what was here 10 years ago, and what do you see and hear today?’… by the way that voice was God telling me ‘you have the responsibility to do this’”. - Ron Jolly

RIP Tom Kelly.
I drive by Tom Kelly’s old childhood home daily on my commute from work, and I often wonder if the current inhabitants know about the influence the previous resident had on America’s largest game bird.

Around 20 years ago, I had the chance to meet Tom Kelly at an NWTF event in Bay Minette, AL. We happened upon the bar at the same time and I overheard his request to the barkeep, “give me some of that buhyd.” Obviously, referring to Wild Turkey Bourbon.

I introduced myself and told him I was a long time fan, and we shook hands and talked about normal things like shotshells and turkeys, but as soon as I told him I was in college to be a writer of sorts, his head shot up and his face lit up with a smile. As he smiled he shook my hand again, and a wave of pride ran through me.

For centuries humans have recorded what has inspired us. From rudimentary cave drawings to masterpieces from Bach or Monet, we attempt to convey the feelings that greatly move us in the subjects that define our unique lives. Tom Kelly did that with the Wild Turkey, and no one else has ever came close to touching him on that. The subject he chose for his magnum opus is a worthy one. It is one that has been important in my life, so hanging on to every word from nearly every book he scrawled down was easy. We lost an exemplar hunter and inspiring man.

As a 4th generation soldier of The Legion, I thank you Colonel for your transcendent words, and THANK YOU to Laura for continuing his legacy. I’m eternally thankful for him cataloging our culture and favorite bird in such a vivid, humorous, and mindful manner. His books are treasured, valuable works of art - and not just monetarily speaking.

This Turkey Tuesday is about the feathers on a wild turkey’s head. Although toms have little feathering on their head and neck, hens have pronounced feathers in these areas that have important functions. Wild turkeys, like many birds, have bristle and specialized filoplume feathers that provide protection, sensory functions, communication, and camouflage. These feathers around the eyes help block debris, and coupled with multiple eyelids, keep the eyes clear – and vision is critical to a hen’s survival. Filoplumes also act as sensors of sort, helping the bird detect movement, changes in air flow, and vibrations – corpuscles at the base of the feathers basically allow the bird to “feel” changes in the environment around the head. It’s also believed that wild turkeys recognize each other at least partially from the appearance of their head, so differences in feather patterns serve as a form of communication and individual recognition. Lastly, feathering on the head of a hen helps her blend into the environment which is particularly important when she’s incubating. The take home is the feathers on a hen’s head serve important functions that influence many aspects of her life. Pic by Dale Kauzlaric #wildturkey #wildturkeys #feather #turkey #feathers
