CAMÉLÉON BY TIAKOLA (MURIELLE’S VERSION) 📿🦎🦋🇨🇩

I am constantly searching for home.

As a first-generation Congolese child, born in Belgium and raised in America, my entire life has been spent living between a multitude of worlds. Some jokes and thoughts sit better on my tongue in Lingala or French. My cultural references are so vast, yet so foreign to my peers who often times are unfamiliar with the 2nd largest country in Africa and our impact on the globe.

There is a deep exhale I experience when I land in Kinshasa, Paris, Brussels, and London, where the people of our diaspora color the streets, where I hear Lingala while catching the train to Matongé, Château Rouge, or Seven Sisters, in search of matching fabric for a liputa for a cousin’s wedding. Popular songs played at my first communion party blast in a club where people of all backgrounds know the lyrics and choreography.

For 6 years I’ve been in deep research, trying to bring that feeling of home to my music, and I love seeing how other artists in my community continue to explore this feeling in their work. @tiakola’s Caméléon (and overall discography) is a perfect example of the incredible art and music coming out of these cities from my fellow Congolese artists. Here’s my addition, a verse in English, to this song that captures a feeling so many of us have a hard time putting words to.

My wish, as I continue to unravel my EP, BY ANY MEANS NECESSARY, is that the music takes on a life of it’s own and sheds light on my Congo, our Congo. ♥️

For those who are unfamiliar with Congolese music, I’ve created the first of a series of 4 playlists that only scratches the surface of the treasure trove.

001 is called NGANDA YA BAKULUTU, or “the oldheads’ bar,” which was the name of my grandfather’s bar in Kinshasa (he was a true music lover, and a fan of a few artists I have featured).

Link in my bio, class is in session.

William - Thanks for having me play a role on this body of work. I’m grateful that I’ve been able to get to know you as a brother throughout this process. The most important thing that I’ll hold on to whilst creating this album was being able to openly share my faith with God to you. Whether that was us going to church together, sharing my testimony, going through scriptures, praying, opening up, discussions or you waking me up with phone calls to know more about how to be a light in our industry at 1am… I believe these were all the key foundations that led us to connect and create on a deeper level. I pray that you continue to seek and put God first as you carry on walking on your journey of faith. You are the best annoying little brother I could ask for. Thank You William
