There’s still time to sponsor our Birdathon teams in support of Great Gull Island. ✅ See the Link in Bio. Most importantly, get out there for World Migratory Bird Day, Global Big Day | Saturday, May 11! It’s the height of spring migration. The short, sweet season… 🐦 🦆

Keep tagging us in your amazing photos. We love sharing with our bird obsessed community. 🤩

Here are your Nature Notes for Labor Day weekend:

Are you staying local or heading out of town? Wherever you spend this long weekend - keep your eyes on the skies, and on the plants, for birds and bugs!

🐛Milkweed & Monarchs: Look for eggs, caterpillars, pupae, or chrysalis on the undersides of leaves.

🐦 Brush up on your confusing fall warblers ID skills. “Is that a Pine? Bay Breasted? Cape May?”

🍎 Focus on fruiting trees and shrubs providing a berry buffet to fuel up hungry fall migrants. (crab apple, black cherry, hawthorn trees, etc)

🍄Mushrooms - The recent deluge of rain means fungi are amongi!

Share your Nature Notes with us! Tag @LinnaeanNY

🙏🏼 LSNY members for sharing your photos !

Thank you, @sprite772 for this question!

Did you know that tea (green, white, black and everything in between) is LOADED with antioxidants? Of course, I’m not saying to give up on eating the rainbow 🌈 , but you should consider adding tea (UNSWEETENED) to your daily routine!

A few facts about tea:
🫖The type and amount of antioxidants differ between tea leaves and how it’s brewed.
🫖The antioxidants can help prevent including heart disease and cancer (along with a healthy lifestyle).
🫖It may help with stress and anxiety. The sensory experience and routine around drinking tea help bring on a sense of ‘calm’ in some.
🫖It’s a great alternative to more calorically dense drink options, and even fun for the kids to enjoy! The can sip it warm or even enjoy it iced!

A few don’ts:
🍃Add a ton of sweetener to your tea, especially if drinking multiple glasses per day.
🍃DON’T BUY DETOX TEAS! THEY’RE A HOAX!!!
🍃Watch out for hidden calories in bubble teas and specialty teas from your local coffeeshop.

You can’t max out on tea, folks! Drink it all day long, though consider switching to decaf around midday.

🤙Pinkies up!

It takes a village - it BECAME a village!

Covid meant many of us were isolated and forced to renegotiate our assumptions about work, habits and hobbies.

One silver lining for many New Yorkers, was our proximity to Central Park & the community we were able to build through Tuesday morning bird walks.

Organized and led by enthusiastic volunteers and populated by new and experienced birders, these weekly gatherings became an opportunity for strangers to become friends, for skills to be shared, and for the collective enjoyment of migration.

To quote LSNY president, Ken Chaya, “Any organization is only as strong as its members!” We want to express our deepest thanks to everyone who helped build the LSNY community this Spring!

Your curiosity, generosity of spirit and buoyant birding energy made this season’s walks some of our most memorable.
