3 years ago today, I added nitro funny car to my list of NHRA licenses. To do it in Paul Smith’s car with John ‘Bodie’ Smith and Scott Palmer signing off on it was awesome. It was just a little more than 3 years after earning my top fuel license, and a little more than 10 years after my brother from another mother Roy and I were sitting in the @teamkalitta hospitality talking about our goals. It’s been a long journey, so to have my pal AJ Ware be there in person (who has seen a large part of it) was amazing. It would have been great to have both Tim Charlet and Rocky Pirrone there since they have been there from the very beginning, but I know they would have been if it was possible.
When I reflect on the journey I have been on for the last 20 years of racing consistently (my first trip down the drag strip was actually in 1988), I am most grateful for the friendships and memories that were made along the way.
Working on big, crazy goals can take longer than you expect. In 2013, I truly thought I would be racing full time in Top Fuel by 2016. Here we are, 10 years later and I am still working on racing full time. What I found is that if you constantly measure your success against the distance you are from your goals, then you will never be happy. If you measure your success by how far you have come, then you will be consistently grateful. That gratitude is what still fuels my desire to keep going until I finally get my shot at a full time ride in either funny car or top fuel.
I know that racing and @right_2_breathe is what I am meant to do. All I can do is learn the lessons that come my way and keep going, no matter what. It just has to happen at some point, and you can bet that I’m ready…
