sense 2 sense 2026 publication is here! 🤍

this summer i spent 5 weeks writing and reading and translating the senses (sight, hearing, smell, taste, touch) with a group of brilliant souls at ultralight school @library_of_light, led by the amazing duo laurel @roombaghost and meg @meggmillerr. in the end we compiled and edited all of our favorite works into this very print book! and companion website! (sound on!)

with this publication @angiepai and @az.fang and i wanted to design something that felt more like a shared document, a place that collected all of the visible traces of our learnings and discussions together. we invited the class to send us their handwritten notes, screenshots, underlined passages, sketches— field notes of their writing process translating the senses— and incorporated them into the visual look of this pub. a snail trail of our multisensory process~

i also had the pleasure of drawing an illustrative element for the table of contents and risograph postcard insert, asking “if your writing could be a vessel, would would it look like? each writer wrote a detailed description and i translated each person’s writing into a drawn vessel, a challenge i greatly enjoyed. i still laugh thinking of the table of contents as a literal table with different cups on it.

it was fun, it was sexy, i loved it. in the book i wrote about heartbreak because i’m JUST A GIRL 🥺😤 I want to keep writing, designing, drawing, photographing, printing books with other brilliant humans. i want to be forever changed by the process again and again and again and translate things and let things fall through the cracks and it be imperfect because that what makes it worthwhile. AI could never.

S2S is here! We made a publication for Ultralight School’s Sense to Sense class (taught this summer by @roombaghost and @meggmillerr).

The printed and web publications feature writing, drawings, and sensorial translations by the class. It includes my essay on 𝓉𝑜𝓊𝒸𝒽, meditating on the physical and intimate gestures we perform on our devices, and the traces they leave on our bodies.

It's funny to me that the Western kitchen toolkit seems to have a one size fits one knife for a specific job. Growing up I saw my grandmother break down whole chickens and finely julienne kaffir lime leaves with the same cleaver. Once in a while she would ask my uncle to sharpen it. He would sit down on a comically small stool and polish the edge over a flattened rock he kept around the house.

A couple of years ago, while shopping around at @kitchenprovisions in London, I bought my first Chopper King. A Taiwanese Chinese-style cleaver made of VG10 Japanese steel. This cleaver has been my workhorse ever since. If I were to only take one knife around the world, it would be this one. It just suits my cutting style so well and is a better tool for more fibrous prep such as lemongrass and ginger. I love how you can slap garlic into instant mince and use it as a bench scraper to easily transfer your prep.

Last month, my Taiwanese bestie @sputnikuo was in Taichung and kindly visited the family-owned workshop where these knives were made. The craftsman talked her through the knives they had on hand. I decided on getting a thin slicer made of new VG10W steel and a beefy chopper that is more catered to butchery and carving roasted/grilled meats. The man even hand-sharpened and polished the cleavers and gave us some free knife guards.

Today, Anna hand-delivered these knives to me in Brussels, which means she is the bestest.

Scenes from Regen, an intimate experience we hosted in Taiwan in collaboration with an incredible group of local artists @angiepai @itsyosquared @sputnikuo at @xiaoyinteahouse 🙏

The evening brought together a special group of creatives - grounded in a tea ceremony & conversation, paired with a collection of short films produced by SUIKA showcasing the story & philosophies of:
- Lily, owner & tea master of Xiao Yin
- 鄭永順, Pinglin Tea Farmer
- Angie, Artist

The experience also featured beautiful artworks by @angiepai & @sputnikuo and animation by @itsyosquared 🫶 This soundscape was also produced by SUIKA using conversations with Lily to pair with the evening.

It was an honour for us to be welcomed in and such a privilege to learn so much from everyone along the way 🙏 An endless thank you to everyone and especially @angiepai for being the backbone of the project & ianc_zz @xiaoyinteahouse for hosting & sharing her immense tea expertise.

The focus of Regen as an experience is to showcase region & regeneration and the human stories behind it.

I wait at the kiss and ride for Lulu to drop off the running shoes I forgot at the hostel. She pulls up on her scooter and dangles the goods from a carabiner. I give her a big hug, thank her, and we say goodbye one last time. I get to my gate just in the nick of time. Once settled, I am left thinking when, where, or whether I'll see her again. The past months of travelling have acquainted me very well with these questions.

This existence is riddled with life trajectories. Some cross, some miss each other entirely, and a few of us are blessed to touch parallel into infinity.

Maybe we were sat across each other at a roadside stall slurping noodles on plastic chairs. Plus ones at a party full of strangers. We might have shared a kiss during a night pregnant with possibilities in some foreign country. Perhaps it was one of those conversations where we opened ourselves up completely, invited each other into the halls of our deepest secrets, just to check out the day after and never see each other again.

I peek outside the window of my airplane, and I can barely imagine the tapestry we collectively weave day by day. Every speck of light a car driving its own miniature world, every house a constellation, and everyone on this flight it's own little universe.

I will turn 28 this weekend. There's a sadness that I will almost miss out on the entirety of pretty much everything. But only because I am greedy and curious for all that's out there. These are the conditions of this life though.

Thanks to its finitude, our lives are inevitably full of activities that we're doing for the very last time or never at all. There will be a last time that you hug your mom, or swim in the ocean, or make love, or sing karaoke in Taipei. Maybe I'll never see Lulu again.

It shouldn't stop anyone from trying. The possibility of human connection is more important than the possibility of inconvenience, embarrassment, or loss. There'll be almost always no way to know, in the moment itself, that you're doing it for the last time. So cherish as you go.

If you are reading this, it's very likely we have touched hearts in some way. I thank you dearly, and I truly hope we meet again.

#NOWNESSASIAPicks NEW: In the music video for Nicholas Semrad's 'Dawn', Taipei-based director Anna Kuo captures the restrained contradictions of the city's stray dogs. 🐕️⁠

Moving through the 'shadows of the city', these dogs embody a poignant metaphor for the song's layered emotionality, portraying a state of being 'so close yet so far'. Filmed across 14 days in late summer, Kuo adopts a documentary approach to follow the daily lives of stray dogs amidst Taipei's industrial landscape. Rather than evoking pity, the film frames their existence in a natural state.⁠
