We are kicking off our 2026 Fall Makers with our first sewist, Shirley from @spworkspace . We love her fresh take on fall dressing, pairing the Micro Stripe Yarn Dyed Linen Blend Shirting in Graphite with the @paradisepatterns Protea Pants and the Abstract Art Print Linen Shirting in Avocado/Black with the @truebias Merritt top. She makes such a great outfit!!

Let’s find out more about Shirley and her plans for fall.

1. How long have you been sewing, and what is your best sewing advice to others?

I don’t remember ever not sewing! I sewed a few clothes in high school, then took up quilting in my early 20s. I have a longarm quilting machine and have been a quilt maker for over 40 years. I started sewing my own clothes again about 5 years ago and have never looked back! My best sewing advice is to pick a pattern and go for it! Many Indie pattern designers have tutorials, so help is not far away. You can do it!!

2. What are you most excited to sew for fall?

This might be the year of jackets!

3. What is your favorite fall fabric to work with?

I sew a lot of knits. I also sew a lot of garments for my grandkids, and knits are their fabric of choice! I also love a nice cotton twill for jackets and pants.

4. What fabric(s) from the new Style Maker Fabrics Fall collection immediately caught your eye, and why?

I like to sew with natural fabrics, cotton, linen, wool, etc. I was immediately drawn to the printed abstract art linen and just knew that I wanted to make a shirt.

5. If you could design your fall wardrobe around a certain color palette, what would it be?

I love the fall colors of greens and rusts, but I am all over the map when it comes to choosing colors. I love the softer neutrals, but sometimes you just need something brighter.

6. “This fall I want to sew more __________”
jackets!!

7. Statement fabric or statement buttons?
Fabric

8. Denim or Corduroy?
corduroy

Shirley @spworkspace was quick off the mark with our latest Grazia Culottes pattern, having already made two pairs! She says…

“I made these without toiling and the fit was spot on! It’s the perfect summer pull on culotte with a flat front and elastic back. They have a wide leg giving a skirt silhouette.”

Today we want to welcome Shirley (@spworkspace), as one of our community models for the Holmes Dress! ❤️ We are really excited to have partnered with several amazing makers in our community for the launch of the pattern and can’t wait to share more about their projects!

Shirley is an awesome sewist who is always making and sharing her projects on her social media. She has some of the best photos of makes we have ever seen thanks to her daughter, Sarah (@shdressler), who takes all her amazing pictures! Shirley is very active in the online sewing community and is often showcasing, testing, and previewing new indie patterns. 🤩 This means a lot to us designers! Thank you, Shirley!

Shirley made a size 4 and used multiple fabrics (all cotton block prints she picked up on a recent trip to India) to create this gorgeous version of Holmes. 🤯

My jaw hit the floor when I saw Shirley’s dress! The combination of different fabrics in this red colour scheme is so gorgeous. I love block prints and so this dress really does look like something out of a dream. Not to mention the beautiful winter setting. ❄️

It is really cool to see how she played with placing different fabrics in different areas on the dress. I especially love the use of the border print on the hem flounce. The sleeves are another area where a border print would work well because the hem is straight.

We make a point of saying that you can increase or decrease the flounce volume to suit your personal preferences or your fabric width and constraints. This is a great example of a less full hem flounce! 🙌 Shirley also raised the neckline a bit - we include instructions for how to do this with the pattern. It’s easy to do and you get the perfect neckline depth for you!

Thank you so much Shirley! You can head to our blog for more photos and details about Shirley’s dress! ❤️

In the meantime, save 25% on Holmes and Lazo in our shop! And if you buy both, you can get an extra 10% off! 😘

As promised, here are a few more photos of this handmade look featuring the #cntess and #cnisle patterns.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
The Isle Jeans were sewn from a stretch corduroy and the Tess Top was sewn using a tencel jersey.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
The only alteration was a slight widening of the neckband on the top.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Here’s what Shirley had to say about the Isle Jeans pattern: I love the fit of the isles!! They are very comfortable and fit me right at the belly button. If you are a high rise pants wearer these are the ones you need! I wear both my pairs all the time!
