161 years ago on June 19, 1865, Union Major-General Gordon Granger issued General Order #3 in Galveston announcing freedom from slavery in Texas, one of the last places to receive the news.

The date, since dubbed “Juneteenth,” is now observed annually as a federal holiday to celebrate the Emancipation Proclamation’s enforcement and the liberation of the remainder of the enslaved both in Texas and throughout the newly reformed United States.

It's all about lighting • Pavilion Lighting

• Lighting is central to this conceptual framework, being conceived as a fully integrated architectural layer. The scheme supports visual comfort, spatial legibility, and material expression while minimising energy consumption and operational load. After sunset, the lighting reinforces the volumetric clarity of the architecture and creates a refined lighting language providing intuitive wayfinding throughout the Pavilion. The external architectural expression is equally defined by its integrated lighting. At dusk, the building transforms: a controlled, low‑level glow activates the façade, revealing the gentle curvature of the visitor journey while maintaining a soft, comfortable brightness for nighttime viewing.

• The visitor journey follows this continuous line, moving seamlessly from the dynamic, landscaped forecourt through the quiet passages of the reinterpreted Saudi village, into the expansive and immersive Courtyard, before transitioning back through intimate streets into the sequence of experiential rooms. While the exhibition spaces deliver a dynamic digital storytelling, the architectural lighting provide visual respite through a calm, refined lighting language. Creating a rhythm of contrast and calm, the lighting ensures the digital moments feel vibrant and intentional, while the surrounding spaces offer gentle pauses in the journey.

Design has the power to make science accessible, playful, and engaging for all ages.

It’s worth pausing to reflect on what happens when curiosity meets knowledge—and how thoughtful design can guide that journey.

For the Phillip and Patricia Frost Museum of Science (@frostscience)’s Power of Science exhibition in Miami, we partnered with Squint/Opera (@squintopera) to design the UX/UI for a series of interactive experiences. Visitors are invited to jump right in—building coastlines, exploring hurricanes, and unlocking the periodic table through play, experimentation, and discovery.

This project is a reminder that human-centered design can turn complex ideas into engaging, hands-on learning—helping people experience science not just as facts, but as an ongoing process of curiosity and understanding.

Storyboarding a doc-style shoot can feel a bit unconventional (or even overkill), but for the Evolving Cities gallery at @expo2025japan, it was essential. We created detailed animatics for three synced films, then spent five weeks filming across incredible landscapes and cities throughout Saudi Arabia.

Here are a few side-by-side examples — pretty satisfying when some of the boards matched exactly as planned.

For the Evolving Cites gallery, we created three cinematic films - each offering a window into the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia at @expo2025japan. The films play in sync, highlighting stunning landscapes, people, culture, architecture and traditions from across the country.

So many talented people worked on this ambitious project - from producers, designers and creatives in pre-production, to the UK and Saudi film crews during the 5x weeks of shooting and an incredible post team of editors, CG artists, sound designers and AV specialists who brought it all together in Japan for the install!

An unbelievable achievement and a project I’m proud to have been apart of :)

So what's next for HomeForest? While the current digital experience harnesses the power of immersive technologies, the ethos of HomeForest remains focused on creating meaningful experiences that strengthen connections between people and their surroundings.

Since winning the Prize in 2021, Haptic Architects has confirmed that the ideas behind HomeForest continue to shape their work, from the importance of nature to the value of interdisciplinary collaboration, which is a core principle for The Davidson Prize.

Eleanor Greenleaf of Journey also emphasised the impact of working within a diverse, cross-disciplinary team, which included the poet LionHeart, who “brought a really interesting human level to [the proposal].”

The inaugural Davidson Prize-winning project was HomeForest, a digital and physical solution addressing the psychological challenges of home working grounded in the principles of biophilia, developed by an interdisciplinary team including: @squintopera @journeydotworld @hapticarchitects @codatocodaldn @lionheartfelt @yao_mjy @bio_id⁠

The project draws on nature’s restorative benefits and the Japanese concept of shinrin-yoku; forest bathing.

After winning the prize, Journey (which Squint/Opera is now a part of) helped to develop HomeForest into an Apple Vision Pro experience in 2024, featuring a digital twin of the user’s home virtually augmented to bring artificial nature into indoor environments.

The Bloomberg Student Center, a cascading village of timber pavilions, is the new hub for student life at @johnshopkinsu!

Designed with @ShepleyBulfinch and @RockwellGroup, the light-filled mass timber structure features 29 “floating” cantilevered roofs integrated with nearly 1,000 photovoltaic panels and provides a central gathering space for the school’s Homewood campus, connecting it to the neighboring Charles Village. The 150,000-sq-ft building combines a digital media center, a 250-seat performance space, art and dance studios, music rehearsal spaces, a dining hall, and more all under one roof. Shaped through in-depth research into the students’ needs, the building is transparent by design, welcoming daylight from all sides and offering views into the ever-changing mosaic of student life within.

“Where student activities at Johns Hopkins University were once dispersed all over campus and all over town, they are now collected and clustered at the Bloomberg Student Center - a village of timber pavilions climbing the natural hill on the university’s edge. Like the indoor counterpart of The Beach - the circular sloping front lawn of the Homewood campus - the Student Center is open and inviting in all directions. Tugged into the topography, the center is a four-story building where every floor is directly accessible from the outside, from every side. As the individual timber pavilions join together, they leave generous openings in between, allowing daylight and views to reach every corner of the building. At its heart - underneath the solar paneled rooftops - the creative commons is a cascading, four seasons meeting space for students and faculty - academic, cultural, and social activities alike. The mass timber construction not only substantially reduces the embodied carbon footprint of the building, but also provides an atmosphere of welcoming warmth and inviting informality.” - @bjarkeingels, Founder & Creative Director, BIG
