The Importance Of: Channel U Jammer described Channel U as “The pirate radio of TV” which sums it up as well as it can be. You could flick to channel 385, on Sky, and you’d be met with something authentic and from the UK. The became fundamental in the exposure of Grime music up and down the country. Channel U was the first time UK underground music could see itself, hear itself and be itself on TV. The channel gave a platform that stood out from a majority of the available platforms. Unlike pirate radio you didn’t have to be within the broadcast range; listeners could tune in anywhere in the country, spreading tunes further than their local demographic. Artists didn’t have to worry about the distribution of physical media, which was easy to distribute locally but became a logistical nightmare trying to do it independently nationwide. The focus on UK sound, unlike other TV channels, who focused on American music helped spread the music up and down the country. This allowed not only the music to spread, but push both fashion trends and slang from different postcodes. As mentioned, the influence it had on allowing fashion trends to spread was huge. Unlike pirate radio, CDs and tapes, Channel U allowed artists to express themselves visually. An aspect that helped them push there narrative in a way Grime had lacked before Channel U’s creation in 2003. Compared to what output channels artist are having to use today, it seems we have gone backwards. Channel U provided a platform that artists could showcase themselves on. No need to force an algorithm to be discovered. A place created for UK artists to spotlight and showcase the UKs immense talent pool. Channel U wasn’t just a channel, it was culture broadcast in its rawest form. IDs in comments.
