I observed a particular habit of elephants on the last Bandipur visit..
They eat mud !!!!
Yes... They consume mud from forests to maintain their mineral level in their body...
This young champ was doing the same with his mother

Makhna of Rajaji... Part 1

undisputed monarch of Rajaji.
With every step, the forest falls silent. Dust rises like a crown, and the wilderness reminds us who truly belongs here.

Tracking Asian elephants (Elephas maximus) in the Rajaji landscape from dawn to dusk reveals how physiological necessity directly dictates their daily rhythms. As generalists (grazers and browsers) and hindgut fermenters, elephants trade digestive efficiency for volume; their rapid, less efficient digestion requires them to process massive quantities of fibrous biomass for up to 18 hours a day just to meet their metabolic demands. This constant, high-volume feeding strategy is a key driver behind their spatio-temporal shifts in space use and intimately shapes their fluid social associations.

Observing them through these changing hours highlights how their highly dexterous trunks (and at times tusks) work tirelessly to harvest bulk browse—whether they are stripping the bark of Acacia, reaching out for the leaves of Rohini (Mallotus philippensis), foraging on wild Ficus, or breaking down the tough, fibrous stems of understory shrubs like Helicteres isora.

Targeting these specific woody and fibrous plants allows them to maximize structural carbohydrate intake to keep their digestive tract constantly fueled, proving that their unique gut physiology ultimately steers both their sociality and their movement ecology across the landscape.

Following these gentle giants (especially the bull elephants) intensively for around two years has revealed fascinating patterns within their sociality—from all-male groups to complex family structures—and how they navigate the labyrinth of human-wildlife intersections, particularly around human-dominated areas.

May our honest intentions and conscious endeavours help these gentle giants to co-exist with their fellow denizens for eternity...

What is it like to dedicate your life to understanding elephants?

In this episode of Moving Forests, I am joined by wildlife biologist Dr. Sreedhar Vijayakrishnan, a post-doctoral researcher at the Centre for Conservation and Research whose work spans behavioural ecology, wildlife endocrinology, movement ecology, and the human dimensions of conservation.

Having lived among elephants since the age of three, Sreedhar brings rare insight into the emotional, social, and ecological intelligence of Asian elephants.

In this episode, we explore:

• Fascinating childhood stories that shaped his path
• Remarkable facts about elephant behaviour
• The reality of human- elephant conflict and practical solutions
• Challenges in elephant census and conservation
• What the future holds for one of Earth’s most intelligent species

If you care about wildlife, conservation, ecology, or the future of our natural world, this conversation is essential listening.

Love 😘 elephant pawanpari 🦣!!

The Elephant of Corbett Tiger Reserve – Pawan Pari 🐘

I am the mahout of a beautiful elephant named Pawan Pari in Jim Corbett National Park. Our bond is very special – we love each other deeply, understand each other completely, and take great care of one another.

Pawan Pari shares everything with me in her own way, and I can share everything with her too. If there is any danger around, she senses it before me. When a tiger is nearby, she alerts me immediately. And if I am in real danger, she will even step forward to drive the tiger away to protect me.

She is not just a domestic elephant – she is my companion, my protector, and my true friend inside the wild forests of Corbett.
