White horse or unicorn? 🦄

Where we were yesterday: a stallion beneath a rainbow, walking toward the river.

📍 Salt River | Tonto National Forest, Arizona

There’s something truly magical about witnessing wild horses in their natural habitat. 🐎🌿✨

Our third visit to Arizona’s breathtaking Tonto National Forest, and once again, we were fortunate enough to cross paths with the beautiful Salt River wild horses! 🤎

Watching their interactions, unique personalities, and the bonds they share within their bands is such a fascinating, peaceful, and grounding experience. A beautiful reminder to slow down and appreciate nature in its purest form. 🌾

Have you ever experienced wild horses roaming freely? 🐴🤍

Onder het mom;

I am happy to be a supporter of many animal rights groups, and am privileged to be able to visit one of them next week while I am touring in Phoenix—check out the Salt River Wild Horse Management Group @srwhmg

American Wild Horse Conservation @freewildhorses fights to save horses from the guns of the Bureau of Land Management.

End of the year, if you have ten or twenty or a hundred bucks you can throw their way I know they would both be grateful.

I have watched this video a million times! The beauty and hard work that has gone into this brings tears to my eyes. I hope you all enjoy this as much as I do and watch it as many times as I have. @nirvana.mustang.sanctuary

When paddling down the river to see the horses does not go according to plan and turns into an unexpected nighttime adventure.

While we made it out safely, I definitely learned a few things the hard way.

Thankfully, everyone was safe, we eventually regrouped, and I don’t think the kids are still mad at me.

But let this be your reminder: the river is a lot of fun but have a plan, plan for the slower scenario, not the perfect one.

Here’s where I went wrong so you can learn from me:

DO NOT RACE THE SUNSET.
We got a later start than planned and thought we’d still have plenty of time. We didn’t. Give yourself a BIG buffer, especially when you have kids with you. If you are paddling the river near sunset, bring headlamps. Just in case.

CHECK THE RIVER FLOW — AND KNOW WHAT THE NUMBERS ACTUALLY MEAN.
I checked the flow chart before we went. What I didn’t realize was that the numbers meant the river was running extremely low. There wasn’t much current helping us along, so we were paddling almost the entire time. That added a lot of time.

IF THE ESTIMATED TIME IS A RANGE, PLAN FOR THE LONGER TIME.
If it says 1.5–2 hours, plan for 2+ hours — especially with kids, paddleboards and variable low flow.

WANT TO SEE THE HORSES?
We did the long route but I would suggest Goldmine → Phon D. When the river splits, stay LEFT. I took the left side and we made it through just fine with no issues. My husband took the right side and ended up in a narrow, shallow, muddy section through the weeds. This was where the most tears were shed.

My daughter genuinely thought I was lost and that they were never going to find me in the dark.

Ironically, that same section helped us find the lost teen because he had taken the right side too, got slowed down, and we were finally able to catch up with him.

WEAR THE LIFE JACKET.
I made every kid wear one regardless of age. They were NOT thrilled about it. But when I was paddling around in the dark, not knowing exactly where everyone was, knowing they all had life jackets on gave me so much peace of mind.

Under the bridge after the rain and hail storms at Salt River Canyon! ❤️‍🔥 Within the White Mountain Apache Indian Reservation along U.S. Route 60 in Arizona, we were greeted to a high-water, milk chocolate muddy flow typical after upstream rainfall. It’s a great pit stop to stretch your legs and explore on your way up or down from Northern Arizona. There’s a huge set of stairs that is like stair climbing to get your buns burning and steps in as well as just to pause with nature and use the restrooms. If you want to see where we stayed @airbnb, head over to TikTok @cassiehepler or YouTube @explorewithcassie and enjoy the Glade plug-in house in Pinetop. Keep exploring more! ❤️‍🔥❤️‍🔥❤️‍🔥❤️‍🔥❤️‍🔥

One of the highlights from this past Saturday was seeing this wild horse crossing the Lower Salt River, and the sun just hitting it right. I always enjoy these types of scenes 🙂

Always something new 🙂

🐴 MONDAY NIGHT MOVIE NIGHT — but this one might change what you think about America’s wild horses.

Tonight, instead of scrolling for another show, I’m asking you to spend $2.99 and watch Blue Zeus on Prime Video.

I watched it… and then I started researching.

What I learned broke my heart, but what I learned next gave me hope.

There ARE humane alternatives being used. There ARE people proving that fertility control and on-range management can work. And there ARE bipartisan bills already in Congress that could help change how America manages its wild horses.

I’m very new to this fight. I have a lot to learn, and I’m going to listen to the people who have been doing this work for years.

But I know one thing:

I don’t want to blame anyone.
I want to help find a better way.

So tonight, watch Blue Zeus with me.

Then come back here and tell me what you think.

And tomorrow, I’ll show you what we can actually DO about it. 🐴🇺🇸

KEEP THEM WILD.
MANAGE THEM HUMANELY.
FOLLOW THE SCIENCE. Thank you to all photographers and videographers following and recording our majestic wild horses. Thank you @pinenutwildhorseadvocates @srwhmg and all of those organizations continue to fight for their freedom🙏🏽 and amazing superhero sanctuaries like @skydogsanctuary for reuniting this families and working 24/7 to heal and nurture our beautiful wild horses ❤️🙏🏽
