I have no inspirational words to share with these images.

I’d say most of the time I deal with my illness with grace, and acceptance. This year has been different though, when illness continues to progress rather than give you periods of living what a somewhat “normal” 30 year olds life looks like it really fucking sucks. Especially when you are faced with a medical system that fails so many, especially young women with complex and often invisible diseases.

Here is a collection of the good and the bad from my recent 2 week hospitalization. I don’t often share the details of my diagnoses but just to give you an idea, what I’ve been hit with on top of my chronic conditions recently is a pulmonary embolism (my 3rd), pneumonia, a central line infection, and a mass in the right atrium of my heart.

While most are sharing ultrasounds of their beautiful babies, this is what I have to share. I don’t want pity but I do want to keep it real so others feel less alone and perhaps more gentle with themselves. Sometimes crappy things happen one after another or all at once and we need to lean on each other to get through these times. I’m grateful for the people holding me up, and I’m pretty impressed with my body for staying alive through it all 🦓💙💪

Alt text: What these reporters got right, and what they got wrong. Uh ya… Disability pride IS cool. It’s cool to love and embrace all parts of yourself. It’s not social contagion, it’s visibility. & if there is a statistical rise, the lack of regulations on corporations and mass disabling events like Covid are the blame. Disability IS a culture BUT “economic inactivity” is forced on us. It’s not our fault that we’re often excluded from structures, jobs, sports, and social events through a lack of accessibility. On the flip side, the disability culture we create brings us joy and belonging with people we relate to. Diving deeper: if you live in the US, it’s likely your ancestral culture was stripped from you by American whiteness. If you feel resentment towards minority cultures, maybe it’s because you lost yours. Look into your history, and fill that void a healthy way. “Sickfluencers” are good for everyone. Taking away disability stigma is powerful. It normalizes living disabled, which helps ALL people since any of us could become disabled at any time. Plus, information sharing is the heart of intelligence. If your resentment comes from “disability perks” consider you’re a victim of capitalism: overworked and underserved. You shouldn’t have to be disabled to experience government support b/c we all pay the government to work for us. Only offering support for the most vulnerable is the BARE MINIMUM that a government should be doing. America teaches scarcity mindset and pride in the “bootstraps” mentality to control us BUT there is more than enough to go around for everyone to experience comfort and abundance. Consider that your anger is misdirected, which is exactly how our fascist oligarchy government likes it.
