That’s a big Hampala barb!
After maintaining this individual for more than 10 years, it’s grown from about 4-5”/10-12.5 cm to about 18”/46 cm TL.
When I was packing up the residents of this tank for our big move over 6 years ago, this powerful and agile fish just had to prove how aerobatic it can be. I removed the tank covers, drained the water down about half way, and went in with my big collecting net. Hamp nimbly leapt out of the tank, over my shoulder, and landed ‘slam dunk’ - precisely into the full box-sized bag of shipping water set inside a styro box that would be his air cargo shipping container. Thank you very much!
As many of us who’ve moved large fish know, that’s quite the outlier of events. Usually, under the circumstances, a countless number of mishaps can and often will occur.
@sstano - I imagine your Labeobarbus clan can be just as powerful and rowdy. I can’t, however, imagine how a group of five large Hampala would be to maintain and feed in captivity!
In my experience, once they reach a size of around 6-8”/15-20 cm, their tolerance for conspecifics is reduced to about nil. I will never try to keep more than one per tank.

Another great submission by my good friend @sstano ! This time we get to see Max wearing his best tie and #labradortieclip . He’s fighting the good fight that tie clips aren’t just for humans 😂 frankly I think he makes a compelling argument. Comment below which breeds I need to make tie clips for. #kevincossdesigns #tieclip #menswear #dogswear

Time for an aquarium installation update... I've spent the better part of the last week working on plumbing the sump to the tank. Six 1.5" drains and six .75" returns. I was going to try and streamline things by ganging the drains and returns in pairs, and sketched out a few ideas for this, but ended up just running each drain and each return directly from the bottom of the tank to the sump. I had to get creative and take care that all pipes were out of the way of sump maintenance and that the unions I installed would all be accessible. I think I succeeded though, and while the end result looks mildly insane, I am happy with the way everything is routed. I finished the plumbing last night, filled the tank this morning and discovered one of the drain bulkheads on the bottom of the tank was dripping - a small leak... Replaced the bulkhead, and tomorrow morning I'll run another test with H2O to verify that there are no more leaks. 🤞 I also started adding media to the sump. Thanks to @mbl_aquatics for the recommendation of the black plastic baskets you see here. I got about 50 of them and am filling them with ceramic rings, Seachem Matrix and a few other things. They are arranged in successive stacks, each measuring the entire 22" width of the sump (front to back) and about 10" left to right. The stacks will be three levels high (may add a fourth depending on the water level I maintain in the sump) with sheets of egg crate between levels. I'll be seeding this media with all the bio media from the row of quarantine tanks I've been running for the past 6 months with all the fish that are going into this tank. Getting close.
