The road to the Wave is washed out. Canyons, washes and drainages throughout southern Utah are flooding.

Be safe out there. This is true during this storm cycle and always: if in doubt, don’t go - or call our guides here at @dreamlandsafari, we’ll give you the straight talk about what’s accessible (yes you can still get to the Wave trailhead with the appropriate vehicle and local knowledge) and what’s safe or unsafe, on your own or with a professional guide.

I’m incredibly grateful and honored to share that I’ve been selected for the SCARPA Athlete Mentorship Initiative (SAMI).

This one feels pretty special.

A few years ago, I was selected for the Summit Scholarship @summitscholarshipfoundation, one of the first opportunities that opened the door for me into the mountains. At the time, I was just getting started. I didn’t know where climbing would take me or how much it would become a part of my life. 📸: Mark Popovich.

(Keep going to hear my story)

My dad is a huge part of that story. He came to this country from El Salvador and worked hard to build a life for our family. When he later experienced kidney failure, I became more aware of how much I valued the things that connected us.

Climbing became one of those things.
I’d call my family from the mountains, share photos and little pieces of whatever I was experiencing, and sometimes FaceTime them from places they definitely didn’t think I should be. My dad didn’t always understand why I wanted to go higher, farther, or into places that looked completely insane to him, but my family was always there on the other end of the phone.
In a way, the mountains became another place where I could feel connected to him.

Since that first scholarship, climbing has taken me farther than I ever imagined. I’ve learned from incredible mentors, climbed alongside people who have become friends, and found communities that made me feel like I belonged.

I also had the opportunity to come to Colorado for trail work, giving back to the places that had given me so much. I didn’t realize then that I’d eventually be coming back to Colorado for something like this.
And now, tomorrow, I’m heading back to Colorado to meet my SAMI cohort and begin this next chapter.

That feels pretty full circle. SAMI gives me the opportunity to keep learning, as a mountaineer, as a leader, and as someone who wants to help make the outdoors feel more accessible and welcoming for communities that haven’t always seen themselves represented here.

The Summit Scholarship opened a door for me. @sstroeer
I hope this next chapter teaches me how to open a few more.

(Keep going 😂)

There were sections of the Grand Canyon where one wrong step really wasn’t an option. I can still feel this one in my stomach 😨😅

What do you pack to survive the Grand Canyon in the middle of summer? 🫠🎒

Here’s everything @sstroeer and I carried through one of the most extreme environments I’ve ever experienced.
