I was born in San Francisco and went to high school there which is to say Oakland doesn’t owe me anything. That city across the Bay is, if anything, constantly getting robbed of clout and money and sports teams and the rest by SF. I worked there with my brother for a while in an office on Broadway, my father had an office there in the 70s, I think my mother had to spend a civil disobedience jail term in the East Bay decades ago, I’ve had plenty Yoshi’s nights and a few sake-stoned evenings out there. Still Oakland has always been a cipher to me.

And then boom, last Sunday night. A perfect collage of new people and League friends like Josefa and Jonathon and Michele; old schoolers like Sven and R&K co-founder @douglas_hughmanick; stalwart high school crew like @nealpresa and @hoonerism; college-era heroes; all of it in service of raising money for @bayresistance. My own brother, whom I’ve missed much in the year since I saw him last, was there. So it was fitting that we were all hosted by two brothers: Nelson German @chefnel4, the soul, owner and chef of @sobremesaoak, and his brother @djjc_nyc, who made the whole thing swing.

That’s how Sobre Mesa hosted the first of three Anti-ICE Fundraisers in the Bay with @roadsandkingdoms. 120 people turned out and I am in no way surprised that it was a Dominican Afro-Latinx spot that kicked it off. They’ve had more than enough Trujillo in their past to know what’s going on here, to know how to resist without fear, to embrace patience and humanity. There were some Anti-ICE dirty martinis, we raised some glasses, we raised some money, I think we conjured some spirits of the martyrs and activists who would’ve known what to do in these moments.

Good times, good cause. Thank you Oakland, thank you Nelson.

4 long hard days and on Night 4 of our hunt we filled our coolers. Almost got skunked, but gave it one last shot Sunday night. It was hot last week in NE Oregon with temps in the high 90’s and the Elk were not coming out of their hiding places at sunset or sunrise. We were up and down the mountains looking. When we spotted them they were not in the numbers we usually see and always moving away from us. We were on my friend Craig’s cattle ranch and we had Cow Tags for depredation. Too many elk cause damage and the ranchers get issued tags to help thin the heard. The populations are really healthy up there and we got the opportunity to be guided and get a tag. We kept seeing the elk drinking in this pond at the farthest corner of the ranch, mid way down a 1,500 canyon but getting there was never an option with daylight draining. We made to call to commit to this spot Sunday afternoon and be there and ready for evening. Luck turned out our side and a little bit of rain came in and the temps dropped. I had a feeling we were in for our chance. We found them swimming in pond and got within 380 yards. Sven took the first shot and I followed. We both were able to put down an Elk and now we have meat for the winter.

🎶This is my 1,000th Instagram Post🙏🏼

So many things have happened since my first post, the world isn’t what it was, people have come and gone and so many things have changed indefinitely rather it be for the good or for the worst...

But I thought I’d make this post count and tell EVERYONE what I’m thankful for.
💛🎶I’m thankful for:
- The love of my life @just__tina
- My long time friends
- My band mates, all previous, floating and future band mates🙌🏽
-People who I’ve known and love who have past 🙏🏼
-For the opportunities I’ve been given 🙌🏽
-The people I’ve had the great honor of meeting
-My “fans” more like distant family members 💛
-The places I have been
-My hometown
-The new house I’m living in now
-My Pups 🐾
-Most of all I’m thankful for being able to choose how I get to live my life every day that I get up.
Right now there are so many negative things going on in the world and we are in the midst of a ton of uncharted territory but I believe if we all remember what we have, what we take for granted EVERY DAY, the people we are surrounded by and the love that comes with all of that, we can get through just about anything!!
I love all of you and I want to thank you all for being such a crucial part in my life, even if I haven’t met you yet 🙌🏽

What an awesome night of music!
It’s very seldom I get a night off from gigging and what better way to spend it with the boys watching some music!

Cory Wong from Vulfpek with Phoebe Katis at The Catalyst Atrium and then down to get our minds blown with some Jazz Fusion from Marbin at Blue Lagoon!

If you haven’t already check these guys out!! All were incredible musicians. Good to know great music is staying alive🎸🎶🤘🏼
