Shanice Thompson was hospitalised when she got the call for a fashion editorial shoot. "There was no way I was going to miss it," she recounted in a Sunday Gleaner Lifestyle interview with me last week. Thompson, a third-year student at the University of Technology where is reading for a bachelor's degree in communications, arts and technology, said she got a shot of vitality knowing she was booked for a photo assignment. It had been almost two weeks she had been at the University Hospital of the West Indies on account of a flare-up of her sickle cell anemia. But, the SAINT model who has ambitions to put her own stamp in the international modelling space, was determined to be out of that hospital bed for a photoshoot draped in the holiday capsule collection by Jamaican womenswear designer @safidah_ja Discovered by SAINT CEO @deiwghtpeters two years ago, @st.thompson_ is an articulate, is practical-minded of her dreams of pursuing a modelling career as a plus-sized woman in an industry where thin women still rule roost. She shared vignettes of her life being the eldest of three daughters for her chef mother and upholster father. And, spoke on why individuality is super-important and where she sees her life headed in her professional lives as a model and future communications expert. I rang womenswear designer Angella Wilkinson last month with a proposal Gleaner lifestyle editor Jamila Litchmore and I had in mind: Create a Christmas collection that steered clear of expected seasonal tropes: no bright reds or greens. The intrepid designer, who founded her brand Safidah 15 years, was up to the challenge. Collaborating with visual artist Tobean Walters whose still life, landscape and portraiture artwork she long admired and passed each day on her daily commute through Cassava Piece, Scott created a knockout holiday collection. Peasant cut dresses, tunic tops, pencil skirts and bustier tops that featured Walter's hand-painted motifs of butterflies, hummingbird, poinsettias, lignum vitae, and bamboo to reflect the designer's theme of resilience, in her post-Hurricane Melissa world. Scott and Walters shared the story behind their collab capsule collection, and her decade-plus fashion journey with me for a @jamaicagleaner LIVING lead feature.
