I took some clips from @andisykes and @thebikestudi0 🛠️🔝

Eurobike is Europe’s largest bike show, but since COVID, it’s struggled to find an identity as more big brands pull out in favour of smaller events. This year there were fewer halls than ever at the sprawling Frankfurt Messe, and the halls used had conspicuous gaps where space couldn’t be sold. Although few big bike brands paid for stands, all of them were there for meetings and to witness the chaos and hype created by Avinox and Gobao. A face-off of mega stands, where the established player (Avinox) had clearly scrambled to show its new motor gearbox unit along with five hot concept frames. Meanwhile, Gobao was looming large and neon in the background of every video clip and photo. An emerging rival with a product that feels very close to production. It’s now a race to market because this technology will change the shape of e-mountain biking and city bikes forever.

Less than three months after launching the M2S motor, Avinox stole its own thunder by showing the MG Concept – an eCVT motor and gearbox combined, featuring infinite gears within a fixed range and the potential to kill the derailleur on high performance eMTBs (and urban bikes). With five stunning concept bikes (actually just 3D-printed models) on display from Mondraker, Canyon, Commencal, Megamo and Forbidden, Avinox gave a glimpse into the near future, while holding back on hard facts and actual info. Marketing material suggests the potential to create your own gear steps, along with 0.1second ‘shift’ times, a 520% gear range and whispers of battery regen, although no explanation of how this will be achieved. The MG Concept unit itself is pretty compact, just a bit wider than the M2S. Although there are no details on power and torque, it certainly won’t have less than the M2S. Weight is still unknown, as is a launch date, but Avinox did say that it will only be a bit more expensive than the M2S, so complete bikes might be similar to current offerings when you factor in there’s no need for expensive derailleurs or cassettes.

Gobao’s X1 and X1P motors are clearly further ahead in the development cycle, with several rideable demo bikes available for industry and press to try out. The top end X1P unit
