We had a fun adventure last night went to a cute little place in Springfield called The District, that had a name that went along with the theme for our book this month, A Time For Mercy by John Grisham. We dined in a yurt which was pretty neat and had a great time! Our ratings for the book were kind of all over the map from 2’s to a 5 with a 2.9 average so rounding up to a 3 😂. Several of us who had read and liked John Grisham in the past felt this might not have been his best work. We did have good discussions on the actual case the book was about and especially THE ENDING! But as usual we had a great time being together. We all went home with a Jake Brigance business card and the scales of justice and we wore purple in honor of domestic violence awareness. So much fun!

A wonderful way to kick off fall last night. Met at The Oak Bar inside the restaurant formerly known as The Tree Steakhouse to discuss A Good Neighborhood (called Oak Knoll 😜) by Therese Fowler. Ratings were all 3’s & 4’s giving this book an overall rating of 3.5. We talked about what makes a good neighborhood, the dynamics between the Whitman family and the Alston-Holt Family, the fairness of the justice system, the lawsuit around the tree, whether the Whitman’s were truly Christians, the ending of the book, along with other things. We all wore our fall leaves colors and everyone went home with a goodie bag of fall leaves, acorns and an acorn candle representing the dying oak tree from the lawsuit. Fun evening!

We were able to pull off an amazing surprise last night…surprising Gretchen for her 50th birthday at our book club meeting - so fun! We met at Florida Home Store to discuss A Ladder To The Sky by John Boyne. The dress code was black and white stripes because Maurice ends up in prison and Gretchen dutifully wore her black and white while the rest us wore our dress code of yellow. Gretchen arrived on time and we surprised her which was fun! We had Publix sandwiches (there was no good food in the book) and many delicious sides brought by our members. Deb brought a beautiful “G” cake and cute “50” themed cookies. We had a yellow shirt for Gretchen to change into and a gift of 50 Reasons We ❤️ Gretchen 😊. Then on to the book discussion…ratings ranged from a 2 to multiple 3’s and two 4’s, averaging a 3. Lots of discussions around describing Maurice’s overall personality, what Erich had done and if he knew it would end the way it did, how Maurice could do what he did to his wife and child, the cover of the book, and much more. What a fun evening!! Happy 50th Gretchen!!!!

Amazing meeting last night at Florida Home Store to discuss American Dirt by @jeaninecummins. Gigi made us carnitas, cilantro lime rice, corn salsa, avocado crema and galletas cookies for dinner and Lisa was mixing up margaritas. Gigi also brought us all water bottles with beef jerky and American flags and decorated the food station in red, white and blue. The ratings ranged from a 2 to 3’s and 4’s, with an average of a 3. We had hearty discussions on immigration, migrants crossing the border, this story in particular, why Javier did what he did, if Sebastian should have written the article, how long the journey was, and the ending of the book. Deb was quarantined and joined us through Zoom. We all went home with an American flag backpack (which was important on a migrant’s journey) a soccer ball, and an owl statue representing La Lechuza - The Owl who was the head of the drug cartel in the book. Fun evening!

Full turn out for book club last night for our discussion on Hidden Valley Road by Robert Kolker. We met at Mission BBQ as a nod to Don Sr.‘s military career. Ratings ranged from 1’s to 3’s and averaged a 2. We did have lively discussions on schizophrenia, the Galvin family (especially the parents), the effects schizophrenia has on siblings, the medical research in the book, and the possible triggers to the boys in the Galvin family. Margee brought everyone Jello 😜 from Mimi’s reference in the book to serving Jello with whipped cream and my gift to everyone was mental health awareness goodie bags. The dress code was to wear green for mental health awareness. It was a fun evening with an extra special guest visitor as well. 😊😊
