AbDUCKted is a visual story of community care. In this piece, I explore themes of alien abduction, iconic figures such as La Virgen de Guadalupe and Quetzalcóatl, the power of community and collective care, immigration, and hope.
This mural reimagines what an alien-human hybrid of La Virgen might look like through the lens of immigration. The alien identity serves as a reclamation of the negative stigma often associated with immigrants, transforming it into something beautiful and worthy of celebration. It is an invitation to lean into insecurities that once felt paralyzing and debilitating, and to recognize them instead as sources of strength, resilience, and hope.
In the background, Gato the duck is being AbDUCKted by a parasitic U.F.O. (Unidentified Federal Operatives). The design of this flying vessel was inspired by invasive insect species that provide no benefit to their ecosystems and often cause widespread damage to plant life, disrupt food webs, and reduce biodiversity.
Gato’s frog homie is seen trying to pull him back to safety while wielding a ray gun inspired by the cult classic film Killer Klowns from Outer Space. In true “no homie left behind” fashion, Quetzalcóatl swiftly joins the rescue effort, breathing fire toward the ship in an attempt to stop the abduction.
Although La Virgen is not directly participating in the rescue operation, she plays a vital role in moving the story—and our community—forward. In her hands, she holds an anatomical heart that takes on an alien form, loosely inspired by a recurring star motif in my work that traces back to my Indigenous Hñähñu heritage. This alien heart represents humanity’s hope and serves as a symbolic connection to the cosmos, our ancestors, and a higher power. Within this story, La Virgen becomes a guardian figure, preserving hope through moments of chaos, fear, and violence directed toward our communities.
